Jump to Surveywow. It seems to me I just stepped out of my BST class and into a war. What's there to fight so much about?!? I mean, sure, we all have different ideas of how kids are to be raised, and sure, the way you raise a kid has a huge impact on his life, but still...

In my unsolicited opinion you should send your kid to a public school. There are a lot of problems with public schools, but then again, there are a lot of problems with the "real, adult world" too. At least this way the kids are used to the problems there are. A kid should be loved at home, and should be certain of his parents' wholehearted, unquestioning support and love. This way, barring drastic accidents and/or sadistic teachers in the elementary school years, odds are the kid will grow up to be a well-rounded, healthy adult. Maybe. Or he could turn out like the rest of us.
Jump to SurveyTrue, many kids aren't in public schools. They can be put in all kinds of "special" schools and not have any negative effects from that. It's different in this case.

There're maybe a thousand people in this country (USA in my case) who are violently Downsyndromephobic. There are maybe a hundred times that number who are violently homophobic. A kid with Downs' will probably never be made to suffer for it, so there's no point in him even knowing that some people consider his "problem" evil. A gay kid will most likely be harased quite a bit by society for his sexuality, so it's better if he's prepared for that harasment by being in a public school. Then again, maybe it's better if their childhoods are kept happy, away from those narrowminded (and most likely Republican) people who would hate them for their tastes. Then we can warn them about butt-holes in the world while we hand them their diploma, and cut 'em loose.
