Hello People!

"A muddy brook can muddy another brook.
But a muddy brook cannot muddy the sea.
For the sea wll take the mud and spread it along her bed,
and return to the brook fresh water. "

"May all your brooks run clear"

What is a TEAM ?
Describe a team.
Are we a team?
Are we acting like a team?

The American Heritage Dictionary describes a team as…

Team : 1. Two or more harnessed draft animals. 2. A group of players in a game. 3. Any group organized to work together.

We are supposed to be a team. We were brought together to be a team. So according to the dictionary’s discription are we a team? I certainly wouldn’t think that any of us would consider us a group of harnessed draft animals. Although some of us approach their job as if they were tethered oxen or mules. And we are not players in a game. Again some of us perform their job as if it were a game, just playing around. I think the proper definition would be. We are a group organized to work together.

I would propose that The American Heritage Dictionary failed to describe “team sprit” . The key to any group organized to work together as a “team”. Just the performing of one’s duties alongside others, doing their narrow minded individual task. Does not a team make. But I think we need to under stand what “SPIRIT “ is to understand “TEAM SPIRIT”.

The American Heritage Dictionary describes spirit as…

Spirit : 1. The vital principle or animating force within living beings.; the soul. 2. The Holy Ghost. 3. A supernatural being. 4. An individual. 5. Mood or emotional state. 6. Vivacity and courage. 7. Loyalty or dedication. 8. The real sense or significance of something. 9. An alcohol solution of an essential or volatile substance. 10. An alcoholic beverage. 11. To carry off mysteriously or secretly.

Spirited : Energetic; vigorous.

Spiritless : Lacking energy or enthusiasm.

So now I would give you this description of team…

Team : A group of potentially talented, creative and productive individuals. Using God given talents. Brought together to create a service or product of the highest possible quality. In a mood or emotional state of vivacity and courage, loyalty and dedication. Allowing the team to experience a real sense of significance in something.

The key word here is “potential”. In my opinion, a group organized to work together. Will never become a “team” without “spirit” Without spirit the most talented hardest working person will not experience a real sense of significance.

I hope you noticed that someone, that is spiritless. Is lacking energy and enthusiasm. And someone that is spirited is energetic and vigorous.

How does a team work? That question is harder to answer. Situations and circumstances vary. But I will try using an analogy.

We start with a apple cart. The apples representing our goal, or our sense of significance.
And the cart representing our team. The wheels of the cart representing the individual members of the team. Using that image of a pretty little apple cart full of beautiful apples. Rolling along on cute little round wheels. Is how a team works.

But here is the hitch. Taking the analogy a little further, the wheels that represent each member supporting the team, (cart) may not be perfectly round. To describe a person as a cart wheel takes a little imagination so bear with me. Our spirit or soul is the hub of the cart wheel. Emanating from the hub are the spokes. Each spoke representing some aspect of our lives. For example, health, finances, family life, romantic life, courage, and so on. It is not important how many spokes a wheel has, but they need to support the wheel. Using each spoke length to represent the quanitive value of each personal aspect. We see how different length spokes would distort the roundness of the wheel. Causing the wheel not to roll smoothly. This explains why it is important to have balance in your life so you may roll smoothly thru it.

One more point to mention. We should all know that a larger wheel travels further than a smaller wheel at the same rate of revolution. So the longer your spokes, the bigger the wheel, the further you travel. Which is all great if you were a single wheel. As a member of a team, (cart) different size wheels would make the cart roll in strange ways. Now you can see why it is not just important that the wheels be round but they must be the same size. Other wise you upset the apple cart. (Cute hey?)

Seeing how just one wheel cannot do the job alone it is important we help each member grow at the same rate (spoke length) by reaching out providing help and support to other members. All in the effort to protect the beautiful apples (our sense of significance).

So if we are going to claim to be a members of “The team” lets see some SPIRIT. The more spirit you generate the bigger and juicier apples we grow. Someone said “ Perception is reality” I would say “ Our reality is what we perceive it to be” And I perceive a grand reality for all of us.

I like movies but I usually do not have the time to devote to sitting down for two hours. I watch the history channel and Discovery and a sit-com once in a while but TV puts me to sleep.
