I'm far from mainstream w wanders, my opinion is based on experience.
I got an earing when I was 12 and it wasn't 'cool' till I was 16. Up untill that point people just made fun fun of me for it, I had long hair too! People really do mistake you for a girl when you are a young boy with long hair.
