Do you think Oprah Winfrey is racist?

Oprah is a black woman, she talks a lot about black people and gives them a lot of credit for being people. That is fine, I have no problem with black people at all. They're just a different colour, and that's it. But I think she talks about them so much that it has actually become racist.

Again, I am sorry to anyone who may be offended by this survey, and to make it clear I am not the slightest bit racist towards black people.

I don't think that focusing only on the issues of her own race make her racist. However, that limited focus isn't necessarily a good thing either.

No, being supportive of issues dealing with your own race aren't racist, but she doesn't really do that. She supports plenty of causes that are interracial.

I stopped watching Oprah years ago when she had a young girl on her show that had witnessed her entire family murdered while they were vacationing on a boat. The poor girl was crying consistently and Oprah was just bleeding it for all it was worth. It was pathetic and I lost all respect for her. Having said that I don't think she's racist at all. Would you say that Jay Leno or Jon Stewart is racist because his guests are 95% white and their issues are "white" ones? I think your survey may be racist rather than offensive. (So there * raspberry * )

Let's look at the definitions of "racism":
--
A belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.
--

I like that definition. I don't think Oprah is like that.

There's a trend (which I think comes from conservative pundits) to use the words racist and racism right back on the people who are advocates of minority rights or affirmative action. I think they have a point, there is a kind of reverse racism to such things. But, I also think it's dangerous to equate the two as it implies they are equal. They are not. African Americans suffered greatly for centuries in the US under slavery, Jim Crow laws (segregation), lynchings, KKK, etc. There is no comparison, such tactics are offensive.

I think "racist" is a loaded word. What does it mean to you? If you want to be very, very literal, just calling a group of people "black" or "white" could be considered racist, as you're delineating boundaries based on race.

No. There's a difference between pride and racism. And between racism and trying to give people of your race some confidence and inspiration.

Well maybe not exactly like that. But thats basically what she says. Just seems like she is so good to them it's racist. Kinda like too much of a good thing is bad. I strongly believe that.

I have noticed time and time again that Oprah most of the time makes blacks out to be much better than whites. When she does a show about blacks they are always ,lawyers, doctors, writers or highly successful and intelligent people. She is very positive and supportive of blacks. She came up with a talent contest for singers and they were all black.Seldom does she expose a black with negative PR.When she has white guests on they could be white trash beating (or verbally abusing) their wives on a hidden camera in their home, addicted to alcohol or drugs, have had weight problems (and a DUI like Winona Judd), mental problems, various obsessions, etc. I wonder if she would ever expose Diana Ross with her DUI and drug addictions? Would Michael Jackson ever be a guest on her show to talk about sleeping with young boys? How about Coby Bryant and his rape charges? Would she ever have a hidden camera in a black household showing a dysfunctional ,verbally threatening ,and low class way of life? She constantly gets away with reverse discrimination. She is smooth and subtle in her tactics and knows exactly what she is doing.I have read through the lines for years, and wait for the day that she exposes blacks as she does whites.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see that others agree that Oprah is extremely racist against Whites on her show. She inevitably portrays Whites & White families as being dysfunctional, grim & often heartless. She portrays Blacks as either extraordinarily successful (lawyers, surgeons, judges, etc.) or poor, helpless victims of circumstance (ie. Hurricane Katrina, government funding).

(Fun experiment: How many names of Black scientists or surgeons do you know? Can you name even one Black philosopher? Now, replace 'Black' with 'White.' Where does she find these people?)

Oprah suffers from inflated self-esteem & practices obvious racism against non-Black races, but especially White. How many Asians have been feature on her show? Arabs? You might as well be watching Black Entertainment Television when watching Oprah; the show & all its implied 'perceptions' are completely skewed.

I 'm glad she portrays blacks in a positive light. However, her white guests are almost always dysfunctional, involved in a scandal, abusive, set in some sort of humiliating situation, etc. That begs the question how a white talk show host/hostess would fare if he/she did the reverse. In fact, I think white hosts/hostesses go out of their way to treat all races equally, for fear of the liberally applied "racist" tag. Take Jerry Springer, for example (har, har); everyone is an equal-opportunity idiot, whether they be white, black, latino or other. Yet people think Oprah is such a wonderful gal because she advocates the minority underdog and gives her guests gifts. If you watch her show on a regular or even semi-regular basis, pay attention to the general pattern: blacks good, whites bad. It's there. Her tactics are subtle; she's not as gracious, pleasant or nice as viewers and fans have been led to believe.

Man Oprah is Oprah. I personally dont like the woman. She is exremely egotistical and self absorbed. i wouldnt say she is particularly racist, but i would say that she looks down on anyone, weather they are her race or not, who isnt "on the same level" or have the same opinions as her. In that respect, she is racist against everyone. She needs to come off her high horse and quit thinking she's better than everyone else. Especially since she looks at herself as a christian, but not just a christian. the best christian...yet she has had sex,(aside from the rape) is over 50yrs old, and has never been married...im not saying that everyone who considers themselves a christian hasn't had sex out of wedlock, but im talkin bout Miss (I'm The Crap and Everyone Else is Chopped Liver When it Comes to Me), Oprah

A few years ago on one of her shows the topic was slavery. During the show, she talked about how a lot of the slave owners fathered babies with the slave women. She then made the comment, " I bet some of you white folk out there are shaking in your shoes, wondering if you have any black ancestors."

Yes Oprah, I do have black ancestors! My ancestors did have slaves! No, I did not shake in my shoes when I found out about my family roots.

First of all I am proud of my white race just as you are proud of your black race. We all should be proud of our race. There are black racists as well as white racists in this world.
I myself don't judge unless I am judged. I hope somehow Oprah or one of her cronies reads this comment. I can't say, myself if you (Oprah) are a racist, but you sure succeed at trying to knock our race down a peg or two.

I don't watch the show much, but what I have seen looks like the belittling of the white race.
When her audience laughs at something she says, I picture people holding up cue cards
that say laugh. I don't think Oprah has ever said a funny thing on her show.

I'm a Christian and I am praying for her as well as all the other people that say mean or offensive things about others. She should sit down and watch one of her shows sometime.
I hope non-Christians aren't watching her show thinking this is how Christians should act, because it isn't. If I were making some of the comments like she makes, and wanted to go to heaven when I die, I would definitely be "shaking in my shoes."

She has forgotten where she has comes from. She is constantly giving an undertone of being a racist. It is so subtle that the do gooders who follow her miss it...most being white. They continue to let her degrade them. DO NOT be fooled that she has plummeted Dr. Phil and Rachel Ray with their own shows....she is just sharp enough to know what the caucasian public wants and she attaches her name to it! BUT BEWARE! Forbes has reported her as a very powerful woman, and all I see is someone who constantly looks at the monitor during her shows to make sure she doesn't look too fat! Like I said...BEWARE...this is a woman who the public thinks is God's word, and Oprah KNOWS this very well....take her self appointed importance with a very small grain of salt!

Folks need to watch how she treats the Whites that are on her show, unless they are a popular Movie Stars or politician she agrees with, they are not treated with as much respect as the African-Americans are., What ever race they are, people should respect one another , quite living in the past to bring attention to ones self, move on. My wife is watching some Oprah marathon about her last episode and at one point she is sitting around with her friends and commenting on a dip that was being served. Oprah's own comment was "only white people eat dip". Isn't that the same as saying only black people eat watermelon?

If a racist is a person that is trying to preserve their civilized country, their culture, their heritage, their language, their FAITH, then you may call me a racist...so be it!

The ethnics have been GIVEN everything without really earning it...this is why we have so many peoples that expect all the freebies.

I've come to the conclusion, the ethnics can't survive without the white know how. Let's see how they're do in their home countries of Africa, Mexico, etc.
