There's a high-speed bus barreling toward you with no signs of slowing down. Your dog and a foreign tourist stand in its path, deer-in-the-headlights style. You can only save one. Which do you choose?

Foreign Tourist , I have 3 dogs, and I more tolerate them , unlike my aunt who will pamper, preen and they get the best of everything, I will make sure they are fed and watered and take them to a vet etc and will not see them suffer, but human life I hold more important

If I can save one (and am not in deer-in-the-headlights mode myself) then I would save the person.

Well if I had to choose it would be my bud. But really he is smart enough to get the hell out of the way so no intervention on my part would be necessary.
As for the person being a foreigner or not matters little to me in the sense of rescuing them. Now if the choice was someone close to me like my daughter or SO
then I would have chosen them over the dog, but there had better be something wrong with that bus (fail brakes) or that bus driver would be in for a world of hurt.

I would try to save both so we all might die. I don't think a situation would be this black and white.

I'd be doing deer-in-the-headlights along with them.

I'd probably go for my dog on impulse. And I might figure the tourist had a better chance of getting him/herself out of the way.

My first impulse is to say the foreign student...but then I don't own or love any dog, so its hard to say for sure. But it certainly should be the student, as I see it.

Yes you both understand the pooch is like a member of the family and the foreigner is a stranger.
As they say family first.

I'd always save my friend/family over a stranger, and I don't really differentiate between animals and humans. I also think the person has more of a chance of recognizing the danger of the bus.

It would be interesting to see different folks put up against the dog (a child, your mom, your neighbor that you never met, someone who looks just like you, etc.) Or maybe as a ranking survey: Who would you save first?

See: Trolley problem if you're interested in some over the variants and more-specific ways to word this sort of ethics question. For example, it's often worded such that doing nothing causes one of the outcomes (vs this survey where there's a 3rd option where both die). Also, there's an interesting variant where you actually have to push a fat person to their death in order to save a group of 5 people. That gets into whether or not you can explicitly take an action that kills someone even if it saves more people (e.g. you might still feel like a murderer and perhaps would be in some people's eyes). Some of the calculus involved (e.g. save 1 person vs 5) comes down to certain philosophies like utilitarianism.

I'm imagining that this event is taking place while my wife and I are on vacation in Tahiti. So the foreign tourist is my wife.

My dog, on the other hand, is already dead, so this is easy...

I put neither but it actually depends.... Is the foreign tourist hot with a miniskirt, then I would save her... Otherwise save the dog..

How old is a foreign tourist vs how old is my dog?

I would probably chose the dog, unless the tourist is young.
