Would you rather ...

Another skirts vs pants question. Girls: Would you rather be the only woman wearing a skirt at an event where all the other women are wearing pants or would you rather be the only woman wearing pants at an event where all the other women are wearing skirts? Guys: Would you rather be on a date with a woman in a skirt where all of the other women are wearing pants or vice versa?

VotesAnswer
9Skirt when all others are in pants.
10Pants when all others are in skirts.
11Makes absolutely no difference.

If it was an event where it was obvious that a skirt was the most appropriate clothing (e.g. a ball) then I'd rather be wearing a skirt too rather than making a conscious effort to stand out - though I've seen people much cooler than me pull off the look-at-me-I-deliberately-wore-a-trouser-suit look. So, I'm picturing an event where either could be worn (e.g. a graduation ceremony), but where everyone else happens to have gone for a skirt. In that case, I'd be fine wearing trousers. As a female, I don't think that there are many events where a skirt would be considered inappropriate clothing (except certain sporting activities) so I suppose that might be the safer option, but I'm just far more comfortable in trousers.

Me skirt or dress when all the other gals are wearing pants it is pretty common around this town of Kremmling most girls love to wear only pants

Skirt, all the way. Sometimes, I am the only one wearing a skirt. Especially in the middle of the winter. I will brave the winter if I must.

Umm, "Other", how about "Neither"? Or, I wouldn't want my date to stand out and be different than the others. Of course, my wife has always stood out, generally more dressed-up than any other female wherever we go.

Makes absolutely no difference; as long as the woman is comfortable in what she's wearing: that's the important thing as I see it.
I'd not like to think I was expected to dress in a certain way; although of course such expectations do exist. Good manners are important; clothes...within reason...aren't.

Is it because you prefer pants in general? Or do you think that pants among skirts would stand out less than skirts among pants? Or is it something else? Just curious.

I feel more comfortable in pants. It's mostly about the shoes. I pretty much only wear combat boots. Girl shoes are uncomfortable. I hate them so much that I have worn boots with dresses.

That makes sense. (By the way, I have also worn boots with dresses but in my case it was mostly for the cool look.) Thanks for the comment.

Biggles. I wore a skirt because I am always comfortable in a skirt. I guess if, like you, I were more comfortable in trousers, I might have gone the other way, though I am not sure I would be that brave. In general, I always think of skirts as being more proper than trousers. That may be less true these days, but I just grew up thinking that. Anyway, definitely a first world problem. But a fun one to talk about.

Iseult. I am a skirt girl myself. Like you, even in the winter. I don't like it when my legs are cold, but I have gotten used to it. Probably due to wearing a uniform to school every day in New England. Anyway, I always think of a skirt as more proper. So, I voted for skirt when everyone else is wearing pants. But, evidently, there is some disagreement. Curiouser and curiouser.

I don't think it makes any difference. I'd probably only be uncomfortable if I were dressed far more or far less casually than everyone else.

I agree with Carl that the most important thing is for the girl to be comfortable with what she is wearing. That said, if I had to choose, I would prefer to be with the girl in the skirt.

It would be hard pressed to get me in a skirt.
If I was at an event, I would love if my date wore a skirt and the rest wore pants.

It's funny, my friend went to a Catholic school and was forced to wear skirt everyday with panty hose. Now she hates wearing both.

Pants. I don't care what others are wearing or if I am the only person wearing something. I don't try to stand out but I don't try to match everyone either. I prefer pants to skirts. They are more comfortable.

This must have been made by a woman. I can't imagine a man who would notice that his date was the only one wearing something. Unless, of course, she told him.

Mine was a Catholic school as well, and we were also required to wear skirts every day. I know there were girls who resented it, but most of us did not mind. Actually, I sort of liked the look of our uniform. Also, I began to associate learning and art with skirts, and I think that may be in part why I prefer skirts today. One difference from your friend's experience - we were not allowed to wear pantyhose. Socks, knee socks, or bare legs only.

I will wear what I want. I really don't care what others are wearing. If one was to jump off a bridge would I follow, no (but I might be the one to give them a push * laughing out loud * )

As a gay man,, this is strictly hypothetical for me. I'd love the idea of going on a date with a girl who wore pants when everyone was wearing skirts. I'd imagine it would suggest an independant spirit. Unless it was based on self-consciousness, then I'd be concerned.
I'd hate it the other way around.

You and most other men in my experience. Not that I mind. It is great having a predictable way of making guys happy. When I need a boost, all I need to do is to wear a skirt and I know that guys will pay more attention.

First of all, your position is very similar to the one my friend took when we discussed this issue. I thought it was obvious that women would prefer skirts. She disagreed. (And, judging by the voting, evidently, she is right that it is not obvious.) She said that, no matter how acceptable pants are these days, skirts are still the standard and so the only real way to show independence would be to wear pants. I don't agree but I understand her point (and yours).

Second, I want to thank you for adding your voice to the dialog. I can see that it is an unusual question for a gay man to answer. When I wrote this survey question, I actually thought about this and just hoped that it would be okay. Anyway, I am really pleased that you were willing to give us your opinion under the circumstances. Thank you.

Well I wear them for a completely different reason. I think they are comfortable. Could you imagine your life if you had to buy everything from the mens department? booooooorrrrrrriiiiiiinnnnnggggg.

Hmm. Okay. Is that what you meant when you said you "love skirts" (i.e. you like skirts for yourself!?!) or are you just trying to fluster me with another interpretation? I am clearly in over my head here.

You're awesome Biggles.

Eden: yes, I wear them myself. No, you're not in over your head. I don't crossdress as in fake boobs, dresses, makeup, wigs, etc. I like skirts, hosiery, and heels. But I am always a guy. I'm not a woman trapped in a mans body, I am a man trapped in boring as hell clothing and fashion. So one day I said the hell with it, there are no rules for what I can and can't wear. So I wear what I want. Fashion Freedom man! I don't wear flowery dresses, or strappy sandals, but denim skirts and knee high & ankle boots, etc. Noting overtly feminine, just not accepted as menswear. If that makes any sense.

Thanks for the explanation. I am impressed. That is a fairly open-minded attitude, and I admire your courage for actually seeing it through. You are the first guy I have encountered personally who has ventured in this direction. The closest thing in my personal experience is guys in kilts. For the record, I just love guys in kilts. It's the bare knees and legs that get me every time. Well, also the knowledge that they are ... how do I say this ... more accessible under there. But mostly it is the knees and legs. And all of the Romantic associations - rugged highlanders and all of that.

Trish

No. I think that is the last thing I'd want to wear. I see those everywhere and automatically rule them out. I don't like form fitting clothes at all. I like loose fitting and very soft clothes. Basically I want something that looks like day clothes but feels like jammies.
