I have had so many nightmares about this.

It's seventeen years since I last had pet rats, but I still have terrible dreams about them escaping and not being able to find or catch them. In my dreams, there's just a sense of dread. In reality, I would find something they liked to eat and then call them. Most likely they would come.

Get the 22 and end it quick, or if you have skittish animals in there get a good club (shovel or pitchfork will work) and mash it up.
Same goes for any other type varmint.

Or combine the two. I remember when my grandfather discovered 22 shot shells. He had so much fun shooting squirrels.
