I think all of these are valid methods, though some are going to yield more useful information than others. Reading the whole thing is the best way, though.

The first page is a big one for me, if I enjoy that, I might keep reading. I think you've got to grab a reader with the first few paragraphs.

I usually read the first few pages then jump to the middle and read some here to see if the writing format is similar to the beginning.
I have found some where the author puts all their best effort into the beginning and the end and just fill the middle with fluff.
