What would your immediate thoughts be?

Someone is writing with a pen and accidentally drops it. Instead of picking it back up, they get a new pen from the tray.

Not much. If I passed by later and it was still on the floor, I would pick it up and put it on the nearest raised surface.

The main reason that someone wouldn't pick up a pen if they dropped it where I work is that by the time they had bent down for it, it would already be gone. You do not put down a pen for even a moment on a hospital ward. It will not be there when you come back.

I'd think they were just too busy with their notes to pick it up right away. Then I'd wonder if anyone around would assume they wouldn't pick it up.

Efficient and focussed on what they're writing. They'll presumably pick up the pen shortly.

I would think maybe the pen they'd been using wasn't working very well, so when they dropped it they just picked another pen. Or that they couldn't bend down easily.

I would probably think they might have some sort of pain or problems with balance that makes it hard to lean over.

Something like, I can see the utility function of that decision. Sometimes, it's easier, faster, cleaner or more efficient to take a new pen vs. bending down to get the one that dropped. Though, I'd still hope/expect them to eventually recover the fallen pen as leaving it there seems rude or messy.

They are just lazy and don't want to pick it up

Why would you do that?

Probably a dud pen, so they got another out and were too lazy to properly throw the non-working one away.

This person is well-organized with enough foresight to figure out pens sometimes fall to the ground or stop writing.

They are freaking lazy slobs not to bend down and pick that pen up

Wow. I didn't realize so many people would immediately think the person wouldn't eventually pick it up - like when they are finished writing?

More people didn't think they would pick it up than considered that they would.

I think that comes from just seeing all the garbage strewn along the roads that people throw out their windows as they drive along.
I see this and want to collect a bunch of garbage and go to their house and dump it in their front yard, see how they like it.

Maybe, but indoors? Maybe I should have specified it was indoors. I thought by saying the person accidentally dropped it, the assumption would be that it has not been discarded. I don't consider a dropped object "left there" until a person walks away from it.

I have been in some folks houses where the floors are just covered with garbage that fell there and they are too lazy to pick it up.
And it is not just in their homes, I have had folks over where this has happened, something falls on the floor and they just leave it there.
Needless to say I don't invite those people over again.

But your initial thoughts would essentially be based on prior experiences. "typical people and how they are". I guess I'm more inclined to see all these possibilities and assume the best one first. Or maybe just assume they would do what I would do.
