Yesterday. I unfortunately have shut myself in the house. I do grocery shopping. I see my siblings every three weeks, I see my former neighbors once a month. I have become a shut in...very lonely. Thank God for my son that lives here, he keeps us alive.

Work. It was the start of a new job rotation for me (and every other junior doctor in the country). I really enjoyed my last job, but my boss was rotating away too and it wouldn't have been as good with someone else. Really hoping I enjoy this new job, but today was pretty awful.

How does that work? Every junior doctor in the UK has to work in another hospital for a while? Is the other workplace nearby or could it be in Wales as well? Do you have a say in where you want and don't want to work? For how long do you have to rotate?

We tend to rotate within the same hospital trust for a year at a time, with each individual post lasting four months. I've been really lucky and out of my first nine jobs (two of which I haven't done yet), seven have been in my city's main hospital trust, one was in the community, and one will be at the local cancer hospital (also in my city). The three jobs I do in 2015/16 will be at a hospital in a nearby town. Most people will have done a year in the main city hospitals and a year in smaller hospitals elsewhere in the county at this point in their career.

We get to apply for jobs to a particular deanery, but those deaneries can be very large (e.g. Scotland is a single deanery) and then you can rank jobs within that deanery according to your preference. However, there's a lot of luck involved in whether you get the area and jobs that you want or have to accept a job you don't really want in an inconvenient location. I've been very lucky so far. Although two of my jobs last year were pretty rubbish, I at least go to stay where I wanted.

I took my kid to school this morning. No bus service for high schoolers. Slogging through these PTA moms in minivans every morning is going to be the death of me. We live 5 minutes from the school and it takes me at least 45 minutes in the morning and another 45 minutes picking her up in the afternoon because of the traffic and bad drivers.

We need a new plan.

M1 Abrams Tank, just a thought. It ought flatten them mini-vans right nicely.

grin I was thinking about a flying car, but a tank would be more satisfying.

I think for now, we might just start doing early drop-off and late pick-up.
