How can the polarized political division in the USA be healed?

VotesAnswer
5The news media has to stop emphasizing fanatical fringe elements of each side.
5Moderate politicians must take more of a leadership role to guide people toward understanding and compromise.
5I don't know.
5Other
4The political division is an illusion, both sides are actually quite similar.
3Something bad happening like the assassination of Obama to wake people up to the dangers.
2We've gone beyond healing, only war/genocide/etc. can solve this.
2The political division is normal and healthy and doesn't need to be healed.
1It will fix itself as the economy recovers.

Duct tape. It works for everything. In fact, I think you could even tape a jet together with this stuff. That is some dogin' tape man.

24 hour news cycle. political grandstanding for the media and electoral base. opposition for opposition sake. need to be seen as doing something (really doing nothing). upcoming elections votes before country, people and brains. how do you fix it? God knows and apparently he hasn't told anyone.

I have no idea. It really has gotten just awful. The first two might help, but the likelihood of them happening is slim. I don't think economic recovery will matter, since things were bad in the '90s boom years, too. I fail to see how something bad happening would help, either; 9/11 only made things worse. And although both sides are quite similar in some regards, especially concerning behavior, that hasn't stopped them from being ridiculously polarized.

This country, as well as, other countries have been enslaved to corrupt politics. Only when this country, and others turn back to God's Word will God find favor with us. We need to root out all bad politicians, have term limits. They must live as the average American. We set their wages, their perks. It doesn't take a brain whiz to see where the enemy within wants this country to go. Our living standard is the envy of the world....why aren't other governments trying to raise their people's living standard to ours, and not wanting to lower our living standard of living. I see trouble ahead...a civil war. I hope all states go for nullification. There will be a Continental Congress.

The Mainstream Media needs to stop looking for "balance" where it doesn't exist. I get the desire to air both sides of an argument, and when both sides are arguing from the same set of facts, that's fine. I not only welcome it I encourage it. Por ejemplo take the Congress during the Cold War. The Left and the Right had different ideas about how to deal with the potential threats coming from the Soviet Union, but you know what? At least they both acknowledged that there WAS a Soviet Union. Had these Teabagger fudges been around then they'd be arguing that the Left needs to stop worrying so much about the USSR's nuclear arsenal and spend our defense dollars on protecting us from the Martians, the Girl Scouts, and Andy Gibb. Any responsible journalist, if his guest said something that was demonstrably false, or simply hypocritical, they would at the very least mention it at the end of the piece, if not call the offender out right then and there. But no, they can't do that lest Rush Limbaugh, G. Gordon Liddy, Mark Levin, Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly, George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Joe Scarborough, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, the Fox & Friends gabbers, Greta Van Sussteren, John Stossel, Laura Ingraham, Dick Morris, Sarah Palin, Neal Boortz, Jonah Goldberg, Bernie Goldberg, Carrie Prejean, etc. all go on their TV shows, radio shows (or be regular guests on said shows), or newspaper columns to dog about how this proves that "conservatives have no voice in the media." Not that these fudgenuts are genuine Conservatives mind you, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Remember, Right Wingers are not smart or honest people. Consider that Carrie Prejean insists her 1st Amendment rights were being violated, after being on no fewer than 5 nationally syndicated talks hows in the space of a week, to promote her recently published book. >smiley:::frown

Nothing. There's always been political division.
One reason it will never be resolved is because people like the person who commented two above me..will refuse to let it happen. This person was unable to comment on this survey without bashing the other side..But we aren't going to comment about how amazing his side is. That's the problem though. We may say we want the political division to go away...but it won't happen because we really don't want it to happen. We like believing our side is right all the time. It's not..but we want to believe it is. It's like liking a sports team no matter how awful they are.
It doesn't matter why you like your side so much..but you just do..and it will never be resolved.
Even if we had a super amazing Independent candidate..They STILL wouldn't be elected because of people who are afraid to vote outside of party lines; because you know, it's a lot easier to vote for the same party everytime; it doesn't actually require knowledge of anything.

What? All Maarten did was point out how funny it is that Ms. John Birch Society was suddenly proposing an idea that could easily be seen as Socialism; i.e. that which she considers Evil(TM). How is that bashing?

I was referring to you. I edited it to say "two people".
But I just want to say, I'm not trying to argue..it was just nice that you commented right before me...if someone who was way on the other side had said something similar I would have said basically the same thing.

So long as people continue to think there are exactly two sides to political issues, this situation will remain.

Which is part of the problem; this myth of "balance." I didn't say anything that I can't back up. cerealkiller, LJD, FordGuy, they throw out crap all the time that has no evidence at all, or circumstantial at best. You are contributing to the problem. You are part of this cowardly cadre that if they see someone on TV who says "Obama won the election in '08," frantically searches for someone to say "No, never happened" in order to have "balance."

You have this idea in your head that "both sides are just as bad." Well get over it. How many cops or doctors were murdered over something Keith Olbermann said? How many times has Rachel Maddow hinted at armed insurrection? Ed Schultz didn't create the myth of the Death Panel. Michael Moore never hinted that the former Republican Senator from Rhode Island, Lincoln Chaffee, should be assassinated. Randi Rhodes never suggested we kick all American Muslims out of the military because of that lunatic from Fort Hood.

So next time you get the urge to suggest that the Right and the Left are "the same," smack yourself in the head for being so stupid. Any day you can turn on the TV, and the the Right being bat crap crazy, and the Left just trying to get a word in edgewise, and yet you still cling to this bogus idea that it's wrong for me to suggest that one side is wrong, even when I show my work. I'm glad I never had you as a math teacher. I could put "6 x 6 is 36," and you would go "Well wait, hold on, Mr. Rove in the seat next to you wrote that '6 x 6 = 60% is not a majority and Hawaii is not a state.' Whose to say which of you is right here?" You aren't 6 years old anymore. You are capable of using logic. Start.

Well, you can't pass math anyway even with a legit math teacher..

Look, I told you I didn't want to argue. And I still don't.
So, Obama was joking when he said the war would be over by next year? Funny joke. The policies aren't the same. But just because you lean one direction doesn't make you a saint. So stop thinking that way.

I DON'T WANT TO ARGUE

By bringing out non-partisan wackjobs on stage, so that everyone can laugh at them. Short of tragic events like 9/11 or a president's assassination, its the best way.

Moderate political division is normal and healthy, as long as people are debating actual issues instead of fake outrage issues.

By reducing the population down to 1 / 10th the size. Too many people too close together with too much to beef about. Personally, I look at myself and know that what I think about others may be something I need to look at in myself. Both good and bad. So if we keep to .... well, I don't know... I just don't know anymore because the world seems to have just plain gone crazy! AAAAUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Politics everywhere seem to have swung to the right. Those of us on the left need to hold on and wait for the swing back the other way.
