| Cleo | posted 4-Dec-2001 11:38pm Wishing on a star is only one of them.Hawaiians have many superstitions.Too many to mention here. |
| Irene007 | posted 5-Dec-2001 12:36am I'll avoid walking underneath ladders - it's just common sense. Same with opening an umbrella in the house. I'll wish upon a star just because it's tradition and cute... |
| Irene007 | (reply to Zang) posted 5-Dec-2001 12:48am I'll knock on wood and if I can't find real wood, I'll knock on my head. It's just silly superstition that keeps things you say from happening. I only became superstitious after my children were born, somehow, you don't want to take chances with their lives... In fact, a new habit evolved from my superstitions, I never leave anyone without saying; "I'll see you later." or in French "À tantôt!", this way I'm telling them that I'll see them again. I have told my (French speaking) children why I say this and now, they leave and just say "Later!" (in English) instead of "Salut". My father used to say "A Dios!", now everytime I hear that, it upsets me. In French it's "À Dieu", in English it's "With God" and that's exactly where I'll find my Dad. I wish he had always said, "I'll see you later!"... It's like saying "I love you!" just in case you never have a chance to say it again. You never know... |
| SueBee | posted 5-Dec-2001 1:07am I avoid walking under ladders, but more for safety reasons than superstition. |
| Dino | posted 5-Dec-2001 3:34am I never put new shoes on a table. And I cross my fingers when an ambulance drives past. I also hold my breath when I walk past a tramp but the origin of that was not wanting to smell them - but now its become a superstition. |

| Cleo | (reply to Oscar) posted 5-Dec-2001 6:06pm Thanks Oscar!! But,more than,I've been doing the Christmas shopping thingy. You know....driving from lot to lot,in search of the Ohhhh, soooo perfect Christmas tree. The Charlie Brown Christmas tree, may look good....all cartoony & all,but the reality of that is,that...this is the REAL world. It's the same ritual every year,I go out & hunt down the perfect tree, barter down the price, transport it home, pull up to the house, run in side get my kids & my husband to help bring the monster thing in,set it in the(8yr)usual corner, put water in it,stand back in awe,at the beauty of my accomplishment,at picking the coolest tree on the lot.Quickly run to the kitchen, crack open a bottle of ZIMA,stroll casually over to the stereo, pop in a well rounded, carefully selected, bunch of Christmas(tree trimming) Cds(whats your favorites?),& proceed to,out do last years, tree trimming abilities. Then I ponder thoughts of decorating the out side of the house. No... I'll leave that for another day. Been extremely busy, writing Christmas cards, haven't sent them yet tho.I want to enclose a little something,to give it that personal touch. Gift shopping is practically done, only 4 people to shop for now. They're usually the hardest ones to shop for,so I save them for last......always.Other than that, life is good........very good. All is well in Cleo land. How 'bout you Oscar?? What you been up to lately? |

| Oscar | (reply to Cleo) posted 6-Dec-2001 9:54am Haven't been up to much. We just moved to a way nicer apartment with a fireplace, a balcony, and a garage. I love it. We're working on the Christmas thing too, just not too hard yet. We should get our tree in about 1 week so then I'll work on decorating more. (For now, it's just one stocking above the fireplace lol) Lots of snow here in ND. We just got a crap load of it yesterday, so we're working on getting the streets and driveways cleared again so driving is safe. You wouldn't believe how many native North Dakotans get in accidents every time it snows. You'd think they've never driven in snow before! |
| jkiehart | (reply to Oscar) posted 6-Dec-2001 12:56pm Your apartment has a FIREPLACE???? AND a balcony!!!!!! That is kick ass! One thing I do not miss about living in the midwest is having to drive in the snow. I'm so happy I never have to drive, period. I bet the snow is beautiful! I love cold, I love snow. It's December 6, right now it is 70 &%#$#&% degrees here today. I ran my morning errands in a t-shirt. This is unseasonable for September, let alone December. |
| kaleb777 | (reply to Wicksy) posted 6-Dec-2001 1:27pm What the hell is your problem lately? |
| Oscar | (reply to jkiehart) posted 6-Dec-2001 4:36pm I love our apartment. It's just so homey. The snow is great. We've had such a light winter so far. This is our first real snow this year. I love it, I love it, I love it. We need waaaaaaaaaaaaay more. |

Blowing out candles on a birthday cake is a family tradition. Not doing it would seem weird. I can't remember the last time I actually made a wish. Probably when I was a child.
There are other ones like "knock on wood" that I do sometimes as a social convention. I'm not really sure what it is supposed to mean. Making sure what you said won't happen, I think.
