| msgman | (reply to jkiehart) posted 1-Dec-2001 1:58pm Scottish means from Scotland. Welsh means from Wales. Calling a Scotsman Welsh is like saying a New Yorker is Texan. |

| Zang | posted 1-Dec-2001 2:55pm I can think of five who are about equally famous. It depends on what sort of crowd you hang with. Pop star Tom Jones, Poet Dylan Thomas, Revolutionary Oliver Cromwell, and film stars Richard Burton and Anthony Hopkins. Incidentally, the first thing I thought of was not so famous but very influential Cardiff band the Young Marble Giants. |
| Oscar | posted 1-Dec-2001 3:17pm Patrick Henry? |
| msgman | (reply to Zang) posted 1-Dec-2001 3:36pm Oliver Cromwell wasn't Welsh! He was born in England, and lived for a time in my home town. His family were of Welsh origin, but Olly himself was English by birth and upbringing. |

| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to anoddoblivion) posted 1-Dec-2001 7:24pm Welsh people are from Wales. William Wallace was a Scot. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 1-Dec-2001 7:26pm The only one I can come up with off the top of my head is Tom Jones. |

| msgman | (reply to jkiehart) posted 2-Dec-2001 2:40am Everything? |
| msgman | (reply to anoddoblivion) posted 2-Dec-2001 2:58am Wales is one of the four countries which make up the United Kingdom, and one of the three countries on the island of Great Britain. Confused? You should be Britain is a geographical entity consisting of an island off the north-east coast of mainland Europe. Specifically, the British Isles are all the islands in the archipelago, and Great Britain is the name of the largest single island. England is a political entity, consisting of a country wholly contained within the island of Great Britain (plus a few small and pretty insignificant offshore islands). Wales and Scotland are separate political entities to England, also contained within the island of Great Britain (although Scotland has a lot of small offshore islands as well). The United Kingdom is a political entity, consisting of a federal state that currently comprises the kingdoms of England and Scotland, the principality of Wales and the territory of Northern Ireland. The entire geographical territory of Great Britain is part of the United Kingdom, but the United Kingdom also contains territory on the island of Ireland (and several small islands, including a few that are not part of the British Isles). A couple of maps can be seen at these links: http://www.uk-map-of-england.co.uk/format/index.cfm http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/uk.html In a sense, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can be considered to be the equivalent of states in the USA. But it's more complex than that, partly because England, Scotland and Wales were once independent countries, and the four constituent parts of the UK don't all have equal status (unlike the US, where all the states are considered equal). |
