Do you fit into any kind of stereotype?

No. I wear glasses, so people assume I'm smart. I'm not. My major is Psych, so people assume I like to fudge with people's minds. I don't--well, not too much. I quote Freud too often, so people assume I want to kill my father and have sex with my mother. One word for that. Yuck! And since I like gardening, they assume I'm gay. I'm not even going to deny that. No. That'll mislead you. I'm not gay.

We used to play the A D&D paperbacks like greyhawk, and were there for the the release of the monster manual. I had a volcanic island country (much like disney's 'the island at the top of the world' that came out a few years later) with an interior lake and twe suns, tables for which of my gods intervened based on behavior, climate, and gegraphy. I wrote a program for my calculator (TI-57) in which you could enter numbers ie min:37 max:147 likeliest:96 likelihood:1.7 (1=equal likelihood). You could apply it to anything for instance a cartesian graph overlayed on an archery target, in superceded the critical roll, eg 4-20 damage could become 0-187 but 12 was still most likely. I had a spherical underground teleport harbor with air above, and a breathable sea below, so one need not be too accurate. It had a steam tech viking navy. We made much use of primitive spells: invisibility 15' radius was cast on a rock at the end of a rope so you could step away to attack without dispelling. Evil clerics would cast putrify water on peoples brains. I had Lorelei Luger, an elegant wood sorceress making potions and such. Her fighter was a dwarf riding a black boar with gold inlay tusks. We once escaped the city-state when the whole city was about to lynch us by having our whole party cast simultaneous phantasmal spells to have it appear that their favorite deity appeared telling them to let us have free passage. If I still had time to simulate life (after all, I am now a sorceress), I'd compete with UO by making an html based play system in which guilds all had responsibility for writing specs and producing graphics for their specialty. Architects would write codes, trappers would write animal behaviors, tapestry artisans would provide graphics, etc. The system would allow for all possible happenings that guild politics could reach concensus upon. Character skill development would be contingent upon volunteer work of game specs.
Every book, movie, or fantasy game story that you hook into will eventually become your reality, choose carefully.

wow thats complicated. i play with a dungeon master, well actually i am the dungeon master. i used to run a sorcer. i loved him. he kicked ass. i've read the players guide so many times i've memorized most of the rules and the like. right now i'm making a game for 4 people. a rogue/bard hafling, a druid human, a fighter dwarf, and a fighter human. i recently made an adventure where they had to lead an elven army to battle against a large orc-city. it was amazing they were able to light the ballista's on fire and block the entrances with them.

If you see that ethernet connection, fine, otherwise, on the mundane plane, i was referring to a gaming system i would create in competition to Ultima Online in which software exists for players to expand the system, fill in details, and supply design and graphics. Part of the map (interconnected html pages) might contain your hut, designed by you or someone in the builders guild who knows how to build graphics that meet codes (mud wall drainage, thatching, etc. ) for which you would pay with your earnings from consecrating magic objects, a skill you developed by volunteer work in the magic guild by contributing to committee specs on transference of geographic or diary history to sympathetic magic items or something. Do you think their would be a demand for a free online gaming system in which everyone is responsible for DM'ing within their specialty?
everglow
posted 3-Dec-2001 10:21pm
not really. its too cold. half the fun of the game is the freedom to do whatever. plus its fun to interact with friends and other things. it loses its enchantment if you play online. if thats what you do however diffrent strokes....

I never played online, though my bro does. I thought his UO could betterbe done in a fashion in which people participate and cooperate more in the creativity and diversity of what could happen. I'd agree with you though. My goal would have been to make a system in which anything could happen. Exploding frogs, magic drawer handles, throwing sand, plant hybridizing, cape embroidery, acrobatic skills, whatever you could get your relevant guild to systemize for the rest of the play universe. My bro was still quite creative though. He'd find bugs like lose geography tiles with which he could put in his bag and bring home an indoor pond. He teleported to the inaccessable roof of a castle several screens wide and covered it with dozens of tapestries to form an american flag for those with an aerial view. As far as contact goes, they would use instant messengers simultaneously. Still, I think it was a bit isolating, and offered the theory that he was staying up all night because there is the lure of possible social satisfaction without actual fullfillment. I haven't played in about 19 years.
