| elijahblue | posted 10-Sep-1998 9:07am I have no idea whether those pills work to help you *lose* weight, but I doubt it. |
| Jody | posted 10-Sep-1998 9:20am No miracles. Eat less. Exercise more. Everything in moderation. There is no easier way. *sigh* bill - yeah, it's all about will power, and about won't power. |
| lizzie | posted 10-Sep-1998 9:38am 7 pounds in 7 days is very dangerous. They used to say 2 pounds a week, but now they've downed it to 1 pound a week. This is to insure that your body doesn't go into "starvation" mode. Those pills may help you lose weight, but I doubt it. In any case, they don't teach you better eating habits, so when you stop taking the pills, you will more than likely gain that weight back. |
| lisashea | posted 10-Sep-1998 10:01am "Fitness" magazine recently did a study where they put different people on those different pills and watched what happened. They're apaprently mostly caffeine and are trying to get you to essentially eat nothing but boost your metabolism (or, for some, eat other things and boost metabolism). None worked. None seemed even remotely healthy!! To lose weight you have to eat a proper diet, not *nothing*, and exercise so your body doesn't merely adjust to the new level of calories. Both are good for you anyway, even if you're not dieting - you should always eat nutritious food and exercise just to live longer and more healthily. |
| lelle | posted 10-Sep-1998 10:06am AFAIK, most non-prescription 'diet pills' contain caffeine or amphetamines as the 'miracle' ingredient... No miracles there -- increase activity level, and you'll lose weight. Dieting in the fad sort of way is probably worse for you than using 'miracle' pills, though... |
| dab | posted 10-Sep-1998 12:43pm Sure there are drugs that can cause you to lose weight. So long as health isn't a concern. |
| seven | posted 10-Sep-1998 1:15pm If my junk mail told me I could lose 15 lbs of ugly fat by simply chopping off my head, I'd do it, dammit. |
| Mimi | posted 10-Sep-1998 1:37pm I have tried the the over the counter & prescription 'miracle' pills. Keep your money in your pocket. Sure they will work...if you cut back on calories & exercise faithfully. Why pay someone to do what you have to do anyway? Those miracle drugs always contain something like Mah Wong (I've misspelled that) which is BAD for you and/or caffeine (which I can't have anyway...doctor's orders). One Christmas about 10 years ago I was given a beautiful set of scales & I put it down & stepped on it & was stunned by what I saw. I knew clothes were tight, but 25 pounds! I went on a very strict diet & exercised like a maniac & lost those 25 pounds by the end of January. My doctor was horrified, but I ate a balanced diet & took vitamins & drank lots of water. The key is keeping that metabolism revved up. |
| jjg | posted 10-Sep-1998 1:40pm I don't think they work, and I think they screw with your health. But I'm not a doctor. |
| eris | posted 10-Sep-1998 3:09pm What is your quest? You could lose weight by getting dysentery, too... I think there's too much emphasis on weight and not enough on health in the popular media. *** Re. caffeine - it can really mess you up because it tends to lower blood sugar levels, which makes you hungry. Mimi: "Ma huang" or ephedra, contains ephedrine, a natural (not to say good for you!) analog of amphetamine. In my personal experience, regular exercise works miraculously well, and makes me feel much better, too. The hard part is sticking to it. |
| grmbrand | posted 10-Sep-1998 4:21pm The problem has to do with balance. You screw with your metabolism enough and you'll lose weight. Maybe over seven days, maybe for as long as two weeks. But as soon as your body figures out the schtick, the party's over. Balance is rediscovered, you put the weight back on. The secret to losing weight as I see it is three-fold: You can't have your cake and eat it, too. If you like chips and Dew, eat them, but learn to be cool with the results... It's amazing how self-conscious our culture is. As Hallmark invented Valentine's Day, so too was dieting invented by those who would capitalize on it-- and what lovely results-- liposuction, self-loathing, and my favorite, bulimia. I'll stop before I get into my seven hour rant about how we do what we do for the Almighty Dollar... |
| steve | posted 10-Sep-1998 4:24pm There are diet pills that probably work, but these aren't them. And the ones that do work all seem to mess up your body doing it. PhenFen, then Redux. And before them, doctors used to just get people hooked on speed! It worked, all right. (And the verb you're looking for is "lose," not "loose.") There is hope for diet pills that wouldn't mess up your body too badly at some time in the future (coming out of the current research with leptin) but they're not here yet. Sorry, but it's still restrict your caloric intake and exercise. |
| romkey | posted 11-Sep-1998 8:27am The prescription ones like phen-fen do, as far as I can tell, work. They mediate neurotransmitter interactions in your brain similarly to the way that antidepressants or MDMA work. A lot of other over-the-counter diet drugs are basically speed. Make up your own mind about it. |
| presti | posted 11-Sep-1998 7:45pm I think these "miracle" pills work...but they mess up your body doing it & as soon as you stop the pills you gain all that weight back and then some! They are totally not healthly. |
| dpolicar | posted 15-Sep-1998 6:10pm I've never needed to diet, by virtue of my willingness to be overweight by local standards. I avoid prosthetics if I can, so I doubt I'd use diet pills to diet. Amphetamines work pretty well as diet pills, though they screw up your body; I don't know what these "miracle pills" are supposedly made of so I reserve judgement. I suspect most diets (pill or otherwise) are bogus, since it's such a ripe field for charlatanism (much like psychic readings, self-help seminars, and genital enlargement). |
| phi | posted 18-Sep-1998 7:18pm Aren't those pills just speed? You can get that OTC for much less. |
| Juliet | posted 22-Sep-1998 12:56am Loose? It's LOSE. I tried PhenFen and Redux. NOTHING. Diet and exercise. I work out 10 hours a week. |
| zoomie | posted 23-Sep-1998 10:54pm Someone I know has been on a very expensive prescription appetite-suppressant/diet pill for a few months now. I believe the weight loss average is about 2 pounds a month, or perhaps every 2 weeks. Anyway, these pills don't necessarily work for any length of time and most of the better side-effects like waking earlier and feeling more energetic have worn off. I don't think all doctors who prescribe these pills know enough about weight loss to treat a patient who wants to lose weight. Heavily :) advertised 'miracle' pills aren't going to work, and could be dangerous. |
| nbarone | posted 29-Sep-1998 11:57pm i doubt it, but i really have no basis to make any judgement |
| jzp | posted 4-Oct-1998 9:11am "lose" not "loose". |
| Sybal | posted 6-Oct-1998 1:54am Ok, I was prescribed something called Adepex by my doctor....Its a 37.5 mg tablet that you take in the morning and it keeps you going all day. Lets see, I have lost about 20 lbs. so far in about 2 or 3 months....its quite expensive...but not like you say I guess.....Its $47 every two weeks......as long as you keep losing, he keeps giving. Also, I have tried Metabolife, which is a real energy booster...I think the drugs increase your metabolism...alot of them contain ephindrines......good stuff.....the other one I liked alot was Thermodrene I think it is called...and the cheapest of the bunch....$15 bucks for a couple month's supply at GNC health food stores.....check it out |

I think some of the pills probably work (I think in the future we will likely have a pill that works well and has little side effects). Still accomplishing weight loss through your own will (eating less for a period in order to loss excess pounds) then lifestyle changes (eating reasonably and exercising to maintain weight and stay healthy) is the best thing you can do for yourself. ...and it should be a high priority in your life.
