| anoddoblivion | (reply to icurok) posted 18-Oct-2001 1:19am Yes, that is it. If I have a pet peeve, it is double standarism and hypocrisy. The only reason I'm a music major is because I didn't want to be a hypocrite (I do like music, but I might have been in earth science or atthetics otherwise). I get into trouble all the time talking too much as not to be a hypocrite (we see that here sometimes). I don't like double standardism, were someone says one thing and acts the way they say shouldn't be (something to that effect). Sometimes I get myself into trouble because I'll say something and then do it, but it will be not the most cueth thingto do. Then I'm a hypocrite, because I preach about not sinning and such. Then when I don't sin I'm one...ARGH! (But sinning is a different story) Must go delete a survey now so as not to be one. |

| icurok | (reply to anoddoblivion) posted 18-Oct-2001 9:43am I don't think you'd be a hypocrite for liking music and not doing a music course. If we were obligated to pursue academically everything we liked, where would we be? The kind of hypocrisy I find disgusting is more to do with the hypocrisy of those in positions of power or influence. The politician that decries the increase in single parent families while his mistress is pregnant with his lovechild. The evangelist that tells me I'll burn in hell and then gets caught with a prostitute, the popstar that sells an image of wholesomeness and innocence to kids and then punches a photographer for catching her smoking in a restaurant. the scientist that changes his views on nuclear power in exchange for a healthy retainer from the nuclear industry. Its not just those people though. On a personal level, its meeting people who say "I'm not racist, but....", or "I've got nothing against gay people, but...", or "Don't you feel for those poor people risking their lives to escape oppression. Man, I hate asylum seekers". |

| anoddoblivion | (reply to icurok) posted 19-Oct-2001 1:15am Yes. I despise this what you speak of with a passion. I asked a girl and a guy "So are y'all going to major in music?" They were the two best euphoniums in the state, and at my school. They said no, and I thought it very wrong for them to like something so much and be so good at it and then not pursue it, and I said I would never do this. So now, I am still pursueing running, earth science, Boy Scouts, and Music (the big one) because I don't want to be a hypocrite. Most people let go of things and understand sacrifices. Not me. That's the exact story, just to let you know. irene007--What are you talking of? |
| anoddoblivion | (reply to Irene007) posted 19-Oct-2001 1:17am Ohhhh...the dogs...OK, I'm sorry. This reply came up with my statement about being a hypocrite, and I didn't see until I got to the survey. Sorry. |
| ASB | posted 19-Oct-2001 1:49am Stupid people....I don't just mean unintelligent people either, people that have no common sense fit in this category also. |
| icurok | (reply to anoddoblivion) posted 19-Oct-2001 3:58am hy·poc·ri·sy (hi-'pä-kr&-sE) n. pl. hy·poc·ri·sies 1. The practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess; falseness. 2. An act or instance of such falseness. The two people you speak of probably have many beliefs, feelings and virtues. Part of being human is that sometimes these feelings contradict one another. Although they may love music, and have a talent for it, they may strongly wish to provide a safe, loving, comfortable home for their family. Unfortunately, in the society we live in musicians are not highly paid, and these two people probably place more value on home comforts and security than pursuing a professional career in music for very little money. That is not to say that they are pretending to not like music (which would be hypocrisy), but simply that they are happy to keep music in their personal lives as something they do for pleasure, and to unwind. Being good at something, and enjoying it does not give anyone an obligation to pursue it academically or to do it for a living. You might think it a waste of a talent, but its not hypocrisy. |

| anoddoblivion | (reply to icurok) posted 19-Oct-2001 11:31am No, They are not being hypocrites, that is not what I meant. What I meant was that I said I think it's dumb, and I would never do what they did, waste their talent (I hate saying that because they are talented in other areas, and they might still play some). I thought to myself whatever one is best at and likes the most is what one should pursue. If they had not been around for me to aks them the axact question, I might have never gotten that thought into my head, hence I might not have been a music major. I do think one should pursue what they are good at, so I do it myself so I as not to be a hypocrite on this subject. They are not hypocrites at all. Now were straight on this whole matter, right? |
| icurok | (reply to anoddoblivion) posted 19-Oct-2001 11:53am OK, I can see now that you don't view them as hypocrites. I think I can also appreciate how you would interpret someone not pursuing and developing a talent as wasting a God given gift, and I can see how this bothers you. I can also see that because you believe this, you feel you are morally obligated to pursue your own talents, because otherwise you would think yourself a hypocrite. I can't say I agree with you, but I admire your honesty and the fact that you strive to live your ideals (avoiding hypocrisy and double-standardism). |
| anoddoblivion | (reply to icurok) posted 19-Oct-2001 12:02pm It's so cool that even though we don't agree 100% we see each other is right and appreciate each others views. You and krystal_Rose are so cool this way. |
