| bill | posted 29-Aug-1998 6:08am I don't know if I "love" Red Dwarf, but I enjoyed it and it's better than "okay". Monty Python I do love, there should be a channel playing their work continuously on at all times. Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life" is my favorite movie by them. I don't think I've ever seen a Red Dwarf episode with the android, or perhaps I just don't remember. It offends me to read Monty Python is "much like Mad TV", as it was 100 times better. |
| daver | posted 29-Aug-1998 8:54am I'm british, so I have a genetic predisposition towards british humor. |
| emily | posted 29-Aug-1998 8:56am I'm not dead yet!! |
| Resy | posted 29-Aug-1998 12:17pm I don't recognize red dwarf ... some of the Monty Python stuff is still funny, but I never really watched it. The song we hear the most around here is .. spam, spam, spam |
| Timmi | posted 29-Aug-1998 2:01pm How dare you compare the genius that was Monty Python with the trash that is MadTV! |
| Mimi | posted 29-Aug-1998 3:42pm I liked them at one time & either they have outgrown me or I've outgrown them, but I wouldn't waste my time now. |
| jjg | posted 29-Aug-1998 5:06pm I enjoyed Red Dwarf and Monty Python. I feel Monty Python was much more humorous on television. The movies were good, but the series was better. |
| dab | posted 29-Aug-1998 6:21pm I've only seen about half of one Red Dwarf show so I don't know if I like it or not. Monty Python was okay and is worthy of rebroadcast. |
| BadtzMaru | posted 30-Aug-1998 1:58am 1. I've definitely *heard* of Red Dwarf but have never seen it. 2. I've seen Monty Python movies but not the TV show. 3. Black Adder is the best British humor. |
| pookster | posted 30-Aug-1998 12:59pm Monty Python's the life of Brian was the best. I think :) bill & timmi: sorry, it was the first analogy I could think of :( |
| hunter | posted 30-Aug-1998 6:33pm "worthy of re-broadcasting," what an odd concept. If people will watch it, it's "worthy of re-broadcasting." I enjoy Red Dwarf, but haven't seen enough of it to have an opinion on early/late. I enjoy Monty Python's Flying Circus a great deal. As for British humor, it's hardly monolithic, as you seem to imply. I enjoy both of these shows, hate Mr. Bean and Absolutely Fabulous, and can sit through Are You Being Served, Black Adder and Fawlty Towers. There's a wide variety of the stuff. |
| seven | posted 31-Aug-1998 6:38am I wish they would bring back Dangermouse |
| lizzie | posted 31-Aug-1998 9:59am I have heard of Red Dwarf and Monty Python, but I haven't seen much of either, so I can't comment. In general, I have a hard time with British humor. I just don't get it. |
| milktree | posted 31-Aug-1998 1:43pm Some British humor is brilliant, (these two) and some is really dreadful (Mr Bean and Benny hill). I think you could say the same about American humor, too, some is really embarrassing, some is great. *** I like the Black Adder seasons when Rowan Atkinson plays a clever person, and don't when he's a drooling git. He's really annoying when he's playing an idiot. |
| lisashea | posted 31-Aug-1998 3:48pm I love MP and while I've seen a few episodes of Red Dwarf, I haven't seen enough to form a real opinion. I have many MP movies on tape. |
| dpolicar | posted 31-Aug-1998 4:21pm odd choices. I like em both, though MP is more my style. I like some British humor and hate others... in general I like the dry satirical and utterly surreal stuff (eg "a bit of frye and laurence" and MP) and loathe the burlesque stuff (eg Benny Hill). |
| reality | posted 31-Aug-1998 4:49pm they are not already doing this? one of the PBS stations in the area was showing monty python at like 11:15 a couple nights last week. *heh, I hate Mr. Bean as well, but I like black adder. Benny Hill had it's amusing moments. I hate Absolutely Fabulous as well. I agree with hunter on 'are you being served' and think the same of 'keeping up appearances'(I think that is the title). I haven't really watched fawlty towers. I also enjoyed the 'young ones'. on the whole I like british humor. seven: YES. I loved watching the news each morning when I was in london a few years ago, every day at 8:07 they broke the news report for dangermouse. I didn't get to see that much of it. *milktree: I thought he was only a drooling git in the first series. |
| FacelessShadow | posted 31-Aug-1998 5:03pm Red dwarf is rather lame, It doesn't seem to have enough going on in the episodes. I love Monty python, but I love "Monty python and the holy grail" best. Flying circus is, well, unusual and I don't like it being kind of random, but I like it in general and it can be really funny. I also like Mr. Bean, I used to watch black adder too (same guy). I used to live in one of the past British colonies so I got subjected to a lot of British humor. Mad TV cannot be even remotely compared to Monty Python. MAD TV IS THE SCUM OF THE TV! Monty Python is hilarious and witty and the actors are great. *****Mr bean is not meant to be a drooling idiot, that's not the point. It's about it being ridiculous doing whatever he is doing and just about the comedy of the situation not that he is stupid for doing it. |
| steve | posted 31-Aug-1998 6:37pm I've heard of Red Dwarf, but never seen it. |
| anonymous | posted 31-Aug-1998 6:52pm I know they have been showing Monty Python lately on PBS, but I would be totally psyched if Red Dwarf would be aired too. There is one British show, that PBS in Boston has been showing for years called "Waiting for God". However, they show it at very odd times. Anyway, its about an retirement home...not exactly the most appelling topic for a comedy I know, yet the two lead characters are so witty that I can't help but watch it when it is on. A real gem, that show. |
| wynkin | posted 1-Sep-1998 6:38am I still love Holy Grail. Most American slapstick leaves me cold, but British humor can be a hoot. The Python group were great. I never saw Red Dwarf. |
| anonymous | posted 1-Sep-1998 11:22am I like Red Dwarf, it's worthy of broadcast, but I can't say I love it. The Monty Pythin movies are so different in concept from the show, it's hard to say one is better than the other. The best movie is Life of Brian for its more profound themes. |
| seanhuxter | posted 1-Sep-1998 12:47pm Both are cool. Although I've seen Python enough not to want to re-air them. I REALLY want to see Red Dwarf again! |
| eris | posted 2-Sep-1998 7:28pm Haven't seen Red Dwarf, but have heard of it. "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin" is good in spots; "Blake's Seven" is quite fine, though not strictly comedy. Bill, is there some way we can tag stuff we don't want identified as someone's name? Otherwise they will just have to suffer for choosing something that is also a word... |
| doom | posted 3-Sep-1998 10:56am ***lelle - 'bashing' & 'duvet' skit perhaps?? |
| lelle | posted 4-Sep-1998 10:05am I've only seen part of one episode of Red Dwarf, so I can't really say. In my ignorant opinion it seemed like Dr. Who (which I liked). I do enjoy Monty Python, and my favourite of the movies is Life of Brian. I'd have to say I prefer the Flying Circus over the movies though. I like some "British humour", but not all. In Sweden schoolchildren learn English from watching Fawlty Towers, which I think is great. I'm not fond of Benny Hill style comedy of any nationality. I haven't seen Absolutely Fabulous, but there's this one skit by the same women that is hilarious. ***eris: indeed. |
| jer | posted 4-Sep-1998 11:01am I like Red Dwarf.. rebroadcasting would be good to see them so, part way between the first and second level of choice |
| Juliet | posted 22-Sep-1998 12:42am Best British comedy of all time--Blackadder (two and three). Also loved "The Vicar of Dibley", "Are You Being Served?", "Keeping Up Appearances", "The Brittas Empire" and "Chef". |
