| juliw | posted 3-Oct-2001 3:46pm Yes, I am pretty good at them. I like lots of different word games and puzzles. |
| Oscar | posted 3-Oct-2001 3:57pm nope |
| southernyankee | posted 3-Oct-2001 4:55pm I don't do that many cross word puzzles. |
| Biggles | posted 3-Oct-2001 5:01pm Yes, but not cryptic ones. |
| Gamera | posted 3-Oct-2001 5:03pm No, I suck at crossword puzzles. |
| confetti | posted 3-Oct-2001 6:17pm I suck ass. Two minutes into the puzzle and I'm yelling to Ian to tell me a four-letter word for 'ruler'. It's funny, because I love words. I hate Scrabble and Jumbles, too. The only one of those game-things that I'm good at is Word Searches, because I have sharp eyes. |
| jkiehart | posted 3-Oct-2001 8:53pm Well, I do the Times puzzles. Monday is the easiest, while Saturday, according to David Sedaris, requires the kind of mind that can bend spoons. The Times has a little poem about their puzzles: "Monday's Crosswords Do with Ease Tuesday's Crosswords Not a Breeze Wednesday's Crosswords Harder Still Thursday's Crosswords Take Real Skill Friday's Crosswords-- You've Come This Far Saturday's Crosswords-- You're a Star!" Monday-Wednesday I'm okay. Thursday I can get about half done. Friday and Saturday I don't even look at anymore. The celebrated Sunday Times puzzle averages about a "Thursday" level of difficulty, I generally get about half done. |
| Irene007 | posted 3-Oct-2001 10:02pm My parents always did them so naturally I got interested... My Dad really bugged me though, he could go through them in a fraction of the time it took any of us to do them. He was a walking dictionary in the French and in the English languages! |
| Irene007 | (reply to jkiehart) posted 3-Oct-2001 10:05pm My Dad was good at all of them, but like him; I don't care for those that have mainly celebrities as answers... |
| Cleo | posted 3-Oct-2001 11:22pm No !!!! I'm really bad at it. I prefer Scrabble.............. |
| mandy | posted 4-Oct-2001 12:48am I'm very good at them..... |
| icurok | posted 4-Oct-2001 3:54am Quick crosswords - yes. Cryptic crosswords - no. 12 Across and 16 down - A homonym has a fight with a palindrome, but what does it mean? (6,6,5,4,2,1) Arghhhhhhhhh.. help!!!!! |
| autumnlight | posted 4-Oct-2001 11:30am I like doing them, especially the logic ones, which I am excellent at, but any others and I am average. |
| jkiehart | (reply to Irene007) posted 4-Oct-2001 11:35am "Gone with the ____" Hmmm..... |
| Jemmy | posted 4-Oct-2001 4:08pm Average. I'm better at word searches. |
| Irene007 | (reply to jkiehart) posted 4-Oct-2001 10:57pm ...Wind???? I didn't mean the classics! |
| jkiehart | (reply to Irene007) posted 5-Oct-2001 1:58pm It's a joke. I don't know about bad puzzles, I only do the New York Times. |
| Irene007 | (reply to jkiehart) posted 5-Oct-2001 11:07pm Try the ones in publications like TV guides or "The Inquirer", it's enough to make you puke... I never bought any such publications, but occasionally they have landed in my hands and I tried to find something that may redeem such trash so I looked to the crosswords - I wasted my time... |
| Zang | posted 6-Oct-2001 5:49pm I'm not sure how to rate myself on something like this. I don't do them very often. When I do, it is the easy ones in the newspaper. Sometimes I can finish them, sometimes I get stuck on a couple of words. Often clues relating to movies I haven't seen. My father is the biggest crossword puzzle maniac I have ever seen. He does these ones that aren't even numbered. They just give you clues and a grid. You have to figure out where all the words fit! He doesn't even bother with the newspaper ones anymore. He finds them too simple. |
| Matt | (reply to Irene007) posted 6-Oct-2001 7:17pm Have you ever tried the one in Allo Police? |
| jkiehart | (reply to Irene007) posted 7-Oct-2001 4:34pm LOL If one "lands in your hands" at the supermarket of drug store, you're off the hook. I've, um, wasted lots of time reading the trash at Rite Aid. I can't believe I just admitted that! But if there are new photos of Prince William, Madonna, or Drew Barrymore, I'm like a deer in headlights. |
| nasale | posted 7-Oct-2001 10:28pm I used to do them by the ton. I would send my son out hunting for the RIGHT ONE. I think he's glad I'm off that kick.I've got a bunch of books with half the book not done because if it wasn't very challenging, I got bored easily. So, I only did the ones that made me go nuts trying to figure out the answer.I really like anacrostics and cryptograms too.I haven't done them for a few years though. (Been too busy.) |
| nasale | (reply to icurok) posted 7-Oct-2001 10:34pm If you like that kind of challenge, why don't you look at the site called Confusion? It has some really good ones on there. They won't let you progress until you get the answer to each question. I think there are five levels that get harder as it goes along. |
| icurok | (reply to nasale) posted 8-Oct-2001 3:15am Thanks for the recommendation. I'll be sure to check it out. A friend of mine is a member of thestone.com which sounds similar. I help him out from time to time when he gets stuck. |
| Irene007 | (reply to Matt) posted 9-Oct-2001 7:46am Jamais - tabarnak! |
| Irene007 | (reply to jkiehart) posted 9-Oct-2001 7:47am I hear ya! I have to admit that Lady Diana is compelling... |
| nasale | (reply to icurok) posted 22-Nov-2001 9:28am Thanks for yours too! |
| blondie20 | posted 26-Feb-2006 3:42am Yes, pretty good. |
