Do you suffer from Music Time-Warp Syndrome?

Music Time-Warp Syndrome is a cruel and pernicious disease that often strikes people in their mid to late twenties. Symptoms vary, but the outcome is always the same: an almost total inability to recognise any music (released after the year of their affliction) as being good.

The sufferer will continue to purchase albums by artists that they quite liked in and before the year of their affliction, but any new artists will be considered not as good, or a bit too loud.

Their precise behaviour is somewhat dependent on the year they acquired the syndrome, but they can often be heard voicing their disapproval of anything in the charts by saying things like "There's really no need for all that swearing", "It doesn't even have a proper tune" or "Of course, they all sang live in my day, you know!"

If you think you might be suffering from Music Time-Warp Syndrome, we would like to hear from you! * smile *

My kids and grandkids are probably sick and tired of hearing me say that the song they are listening to is a remake that came out in the sixties and the original was much better. My grandkids think I'm lying because nobody in my age bracket could have that much talent. Then again, I remember thinking that my father must have been soused again when I was a kid listening to the Righteous Brothers sing 'Ebb Tide' and my father informed me that it was from HIS era. And on it goes.....

I don't buy music very much anymore. I'm not stuck on my old albums, BUT I do criticize songs with too much cussing or no tune. I can't stand hearing "music" that doesn't have a proper tune.

My mum does with a vengeance. I was probably too young to notice at the time, but I think it got to her somewhere in the early 80's. Elton John, Phil Collins and Kate Bush - and she thinks she has broad musical tastes. My dad on the other hand is my absolute hero when it comes to music. Although he listens to a lot of classical music, and loves the blues, he has Korn and Slipknot in his CD collection (we actually coined the phrase together one drunken night to explain why all the people his age that he worked with couldn't tell Britney Spears from Missy Elliot).
I'm starting to notice symptoms in myself, like the fact that I think Muse aren't quite as good as Radiohead and that Limp Bizkit and all their clones are not quite as good as Rage Against the Machine used to be, but I still follow music, still go to festivals, and .. well.. well just look at my CD collection ferchrissakes!!!
We also have a theory that a reverse musical time warp syndrome exists that only afflicts teenagers. The symptoms are that the sufferer has an almost total inability to accept that pop music existed before they were born. I've had arguments with my SO's 15yr old sister about whether "Respect" by Wheatus is a cover version or not!

Why, in my day, we sang about things that were really important like the Viet Nam War. And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for? Don't aske me. I don't give a damn. Next stop Is Viet Nam. Now, every other word is f***, and it's no wonder the world is going to Hell in a hand basket.

There's the other syndrome...when you can't recognise old music (music made before you were born)as good even if it is.It's a syndrome striking young people often, and their little sad minds can't bear nothing done before Offspring.
I'm not one of those, and I don't suffer from Music Time-Warp syndrome either and will never do! I LOVE music * smile *

If hating rap qualifies as Music Time Warp Syndrome, count me as one of the afflicted. There are some very solid new acts today (Creed, Nelly Furtado, Dido to name just three), but they are the exception to the rule. In a world dominated by Britney Spears, turgid boy bands, illiterate gangstas and that anorexic Christina Aguilera, it's nice to know there are still real artists with something to say.

I think they need to claw out of their time warp and enter the real world

Sometimes I want to hear the music I liked in high school or college, but the best thing is to discover new music to enjoy. And some of that old music I'd be happy to never hear again, the percentage of really good stuff to dreck remains pretty constant over time. I don't buy that much music, so it's hard to really tell from my CD collection.
