John Wayne. Female is a little harder. Lucille Ball was pretty darned good on that show of hers.

Why John Wayne over, say, Harrison Ford? Harrison Ford is who he is because he got a lucky cast and the part happened to be perfect for him. This has happened to a few other people but he has been by far the best example of this with Indiana Jones.

Why John Wayne over, say, Sean Connery? Sean Connery has had great multiple roles, but not near as many great roles as John Wayne still.

Why John wayne over, say, Humphrey Bogart? He was good at playing a certain type of character and that's it. Granted, John wayne was a cowboy 90% of the time, but he did have other movies with totally different characters than cowboys, but he played them just as well.

I'm going to ignore your explanation and just go with my own preferences. Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve.

To me, I think one of the best actresses is Julia Roberts. She's so diverse with her looks, performances, genres, etc.

My choice for best actor is my friend Jack. Second to him is John Vickery.

Favourite actress? I can't remember her name! Helen something, I think....She was Anna in a recent adaption of Anna Karenina (sp?) and a lawyer in a recent series on UK tv (something Square?).

Sheesh, my memory is going!!!

Merryl Streep can act in anything. She successfully did an Aussie accent in "Evil Angels" which is hard for most Americans. She is believeable at all times. I can't think of a male actor who is as good. The antithesis would have to be John Wayne - he always played John Wayne in any movie.
