It could be a number or not depending on context. It could be the absence of anything (thus, if it isn't anything, then by definition it can't be a number). If it's used in a mathematical operation, obviously it has to represent a number. I can't add 3 and 0 if zero isn't a number, just like I can't add 3 and oranges.

We use zero in daily life as a number (pick a number from zero to ten, for example), but some people consider it not a number, but an absence of number. Confusing enough? I would give you a better definition, but dictionary.com is down (as are a lot of sites-this is probably related to the terrorist attacks in NYC & D.C.).

A number is a representation of how many of something is at state. I means there is a single object. Two means two objects. Zero means there are no objects, therefore zero is a number, as it represents how many of something is at state.

Yes. It is also a place keeper. Zero is essential in mathematics.

Yes, it's part of the binary code (which is composed of the numbers 1 and 0) so that makes it a number! Does that make sense?

Yep. It's a crucial part of numbers. Without zero, $1,000,000,000,000,etc. would simply be $1.
I rest my case.

well, i felt even worse this morning. i was crying after watching some of the news. now i feel just blah! so sad, such a loss and so senseless to do.
and then i think of how sad it will be if we kill innocents as well. i know we have to do something but at times it is such a vicious cycle. anyway, thanks, i will feel better in a bit i guess!

Yes, it is a place holder, and also a way of comparing having some and having none, although that's probably a terrible way of explaining it. Good thing I'm not a math teacher!

It's an absence of number (I think) I absolutely stink at math. I got onto a site called 'Confusion'. you have to really think about your answers sometimes and I just love it. I need the exercise! My kids are on it too. We bounce off each other all the time for hints. My son is very smart so, he usually gets the answers first.
