If someone came up to you on the street, outside your place of business or your home, and whispered "I know what you did," what would you think they were referring to?

note: what would flash through your mind? Even if you doubted that the person actually knew any thing, or even if you haven't done any thing bad, just what would you first come up with that they might be referring to?

I think that what would flash through my mind (certainly the first thing I thought when I read the question) is "What the hell are you talking about?" I mean, I've done a lot of things.

The worst (and only) thing I could think of was that I took an eaxtra 5 minutes on a break. I really need a life...UGH!!

This happened. They were referring to some figment of their deranged imagination, and no other thought even crossed my mind.

I'd think that person was a nut.

I would think that this is a real nut case & I need to get a lot of distance between the two of us. If that didn't work, I would call the police. I doubt that anyone who really knew what someone did & was referring to something bad, would have that much courage. They might phone, but no rational human would confront someone on the street like that. You could say that to the wrong person & get your head knocked off or blown away in a gun-toting state like mine.

elijahblue, I tried to sign your guest book but it didn't work - got a vague geocites error. The ICQ thing seemed like it worked better.
**Hey, everyone, check out elijahblue's homepage, it's chock full of goodness.

Ah, this must be elijahblue. (I liked your web page, btw)
My first reaction would be puzzlement...I honestly don't know what I'd think they were thinking of.
**oops...it's an anonymous survey. Sorry.
**elijahblue: I tried to sign your guestbook...and I wrote that comment before seeing the creator of the survey.

confusion would flash through my mind. I would stare at the person as if he had grown a second head and a third arm from the middle of his chest while doing the macarena. then walk away from them.

I wouldn't have any idea at all. Let me think about it. Nope, a complete blank. Nothing even remotely comes to mind, even if I had to dredge up an "ancient memory".

I can't think of anything that I've done that would be worth saying that to me.

This didn't happen to me exactly, but there are some really weird people around where I work who do curse at us for no reason and sometimes include us in their paranoid fantasies. *daver: what, I'm not allowed to remain anonymous? You're "outing" me? :) I wrote the oreo cookie and time machine surveys, too, just to come clean. But they're anonymous because I didn't think of the questions. Oh, and I'm glad you liked my web pages, thanks... you didn't sign my guestbook. No one ever signs my guest book (pout). *bill: thank you for telling me! I wondered why for the last few weeks no one has signed it! I'll try to go fix it... * I think I fixed it, it's working right now, anyway.

I would be utterly confused, unless of course I knew the person or I'd just finished doing something they might be referring to. Sounds like something one of my friends might do ;)

some delusional figment of their own imagination. which is not to say there aren't thinks I've done that I feel guilty about, but that none of them would come to mind in that situation.

Outside my home: That I don't clean the house.
Outside work: Maybe that I lied a tad to get the job, or maybe something I had said to a customer.

I would think the person was either crazy or mistaken. I can't think of anything I have done recently that anyone would care about.

I can't think of anything. I'd just stand there bewildered, wondering what they could be referring to.

Well, it would depend a lot on their exact words. I certainly have done many things in my life that could be remarked on and probably disapproved of by many people; the list is so long, it would be difficult to guess which one they meant. So the one that would spring to mind would depend on their wording. If it was verbatim as in the survey, I would probably think of some recent sexual peccadillo.

I would think they were refering to their own delusions. I would examine their face to find whether they actually seem serious, and if there was any hint of madness. If so, I would have a cup of coffee with them.
