What are some of the foods you liked as a child, but haven't had in a long time?

I am trying to bring back pleasant memories of candies, treats, or maybe a special dish your relatives made. I got the idea for this survey after reading Kristal Rose's survey asking which television shows we watched when we were younger.

My grandmother's blackberry dumplings. I haven't had them in over 25 years and I wish I had the recipe & the equipment so I could make them again. They were not like standard dumplings (pastry around fruit), but a drop dumpling cooked in the hot blackberry juice.

Foot-shaped frozen chocolate moose on a stick. (That's not how you spell this sort of "moose" is it? lol)

Homegrown raw peas. We never managed to grow more than a handful though.

School dinners. I *actually* liked them at my primary school. The portions were tiny but it was good food. The chocolate pudding we used to have.....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........

Fresh picked hazelnuts (I think they were hazelnuts) from a tree next to my school. I got told off for that *frown* (I was about 10).

Gum/jelly sweets. They *all* have gelatine in! I want jellybabies!

Beef.

Potatoes that I'd grown myself (actually that I'd dug out of the compost heap).

Peanut brittle, jelly fish, mint ice cream, baked french fries...also, I loved (and probably still do) Chef Boyardee. It was amazing that the fat cats my parents are would let their kid eat that schlock, as good as that schlock might be.

There was a lot more food,I had loved as a child, that hasn't been prepared for me,since those days, which memory fails to mention. You see,my dad did the majority of cooking in our house hold.Gosh he was a great cook,I so miss his cooking.*frown* When I was little,he would be cooking, many a mouth watering ethnic dishes,& he would tell me,"Now pay attention Avalon, someday you'll have to cook for your husband." I looked at him & said "Daddy,I'm not going to cook when I get married,I'm going to buy lots & lots of T.V. dinners." He just laughed. To this day I hardly EVER cook any meals cept breakfast.(that's my specialty) David does majority of the cooking. If he didn't,everyone in this house hold would starve,or end up eating fast food,or cereal & milk.My dad died when I was 17 & I regret not taking his advice.

zoet=sweet, hout=wood.
You chew on a piece of wood and sweet liquorice-like juices come out of it.

Zwart-op-wit (black-on-white) is like crushed liquorice.

So, it isn't really food, but candy.

This wasn't a cobbler, but we do have cobblers in the U.S.. My grandmother took freshly picked blackberries, put them in a deep pot with water and cooked them until you basically had blackberry juice. She then took a conical strainer (one with legs) & put it over a deep mixing bowl & pour the liquid & berries thru the strainer and then used the wooden pestle to mash the rest of the juice out of the berries. The strainer kept the pulp & seeds out of the liquid. The juice was returned to the pot & sweetened & heated to boiling or near boiling (I've forgotten which). While the juice was heating, my grandmother made drop dumplings using Bisquick (a buttermilk baking mix) & dropped the dumplings with a spoon into the hot juice to cook. What weren't eaten were left in the pot & the next day, many of the dumplings would be soaked thru with the juice-I liked them best that way. *smile* I want some NOW!

Time travelling indeed!) and the sculpture looks just like the graphics used for the title of that film. It's brilliant.

Only one problem! I got covered in glitter! I've spent the entire day, scattering it. You could tell exactly where I'd been at work. I had it all over my face and cheeks as well (I'd been rubbing my eyes this morning, I got a bit emotional about the letter I'd got up at 6:30am to wait for!)

The AS exam results came out on Thursday (the subject of my Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh! survey!) but I couldn't go and collect them from school because I was working so they were due to arrive in the post Friday morning. Needless to say, Thursday night wasn't the greatest for me! This is the first year these exams have been done and the system has been a big cock up. At the same time we were doing them, the fact that they were a failure was all over the media. We had no text books and no syllabus for many subjects at the beginning of the year. When the syllabuses did arrive they were unclear. We were given work of full A-level standard (I'm a first year, A-levels are second year exams) and a similar quantity to what previous first years were given. But because of the exams being in May/June we had 3 months less to cover it all in. In most of my subjects, we didn't cover everything before the exams. Then the exams were harder than they were supposed to be - full A-level standard according to our teachers.....

So, I was panicking!

I got up at 6:30am to have my shower and wait for the post. He came at about 7:15am. He shoved a handful of letters through our door, I was waiting in the kitchen for him to go so I could get them but I could see that my results weren't there *frown* Then he was stood for ages outside the door before putting a note through to say there was a parcel on the doorstep. Then he walked off. I was pretty much having a heart attack at that point!! I opened the door to get the parcel and he turned around (half-way down our neighbours' drive) and said, "Oh, I think I have another letter for you......" I think I practically grabbed it off him. (I bet I was a scary sight! Wet hair, bare feet and mad staring, panicky eyes!) I shoved all the rest of the post including the parcel at my mum (the parcel was from Cleo, but I didn't realise!) and tore upstairs to open my results!

I am *so* relieved!!!! I got 3 As (Biology, Politics, Sociology) and a B (Chemistry). That is so much better than I thought! I even got 100% in two of my Sociology exams! The politics exam where one of the two questions was on something I hadn't done, I got about 93%! I'm so happy!! *smile* I'm planning on resitting 2 of my chemistry modules because this years result makes half of my overall A-level result and I want to be more sure of getting a good B (I got a low B this year because I messed up one of the papers big time!)

I'm just happy *smile* No more panicking for now! Most people seem to have done either really well *smile* or really badly *frown* My friend who wants to be a vet got four As including 100% in all her Biology exams! I'm so happy for her. She's going to be a vet! (No university with any sense would have turned her down anyway, but now they'd have to be really stupid to turn her away!)

Sorry, I'm still bouncing here!! *grin*

Congrats girlfriend!!You make me proud!

Your so welcome! I thought the glitter would pose a problem,as I was in a hurry to mail it to you that,I hadn't taken the time to shake off the excess glitter.
Sorry 'bout that. However,I'm thrilled that you received it,on the same day as your results.Good timing I guess

Anyways, take your time mailing the box.I got nothing but time.*smile*
Again,CONGRATULATIONS! You go girl!!*smile*

Yes, Ma'am! I have been enjoying myself - just Wednesday, Thursday, Friday that I felt bad.........I have a week off now then I'm back at work for my last week. Then I have one more week off school - I only have to go in one day to talk to my teachers about my results, what I'm doing next year and resits. Then it's back to school *smile* (*surprise* I *like* my school! I'm happy at school! I want to go back!!! *surprise* *surprise* *surprise* !!!)

Now all I have to do is apply to university...........I have to send my application by October 15th and I haven't decided exactly where to apply to yet. I'm going to think about it this week *smile*

Take a look at:

http://www.homespun-ideas.com/cooking/blackberry_dumplings.htm
http://www.mail-archive.com/blackberry-recipe@yahoogroups.com/msg00009.html
http://www.recipesource.com/desserts/10/rec1035.html
http://www.virtualcities.com/ons/az/r/azr26022.htm
http://recipes.alastra.com/dumplings/blackberry.html

If none of those seem right, a web search (including "") of "blackberry dumplings" should bring up loads more URLs *smile*

I hope some of these are right - many use Bisquick.......

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
