Do any medical conditions run in your family?

This would include such things as breast or uterine cancer (which seem to run in families), heart disease and diabetes as well as cancer in general. I am referring to conditions in general that your family line seems predisposed to get.

Diabetes and hypothyroidism run in my family on my mom's side. They are both disorders of the endocrine system. My mom has diabetes and hypothyroidism, one of my sisters has hypothyroidism, and me and my other sister both have hypoglycemia. It sucks. * frown *
My dad's family has heart disease, but it is an unknown issue that just seems to kill you at an early age. My dad has already had 2 heart attacks and one triple bypass surgery. (he's only 56) His brother has had one heart attack and one double (I think) bypass surgery. One of his sisters just died a couple of years ago of an unkown heart disorder. His dad died of an unknown heart disorder when my dad was 18.
I think I'm just destined to die young. lol

Heart disease, adult onset diabetes, allergies & alcoholism (both my biological parents were alcoholic as well as a couple of uncles). Some of my family members show signs of addictive type personalities to such things as alcohol, drugs & gambling. That's why I avoid them like the plaque! There is a huge chance that I will have diabetes later on in life... Cancer is a maybe...

I was just diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Disease/Disorder and have since found out that my aunt was diagnosed with this also.. Other relatives have similar symptoms.

do you control it with medication?
My mom had to have a goiter removed from her neck because of it. My sister has to monitor the goiter in her neck to make sure that surgery isn't necessary along with taking medication for it.
Does it cause you to have weight problems?

Asperger's Syndrome.

A lot of my family have had/died of cancer but I wouldn't say it runs in the family. Something like one in three people get cancer so it's difficult to link families in unless it's the same type of cancer.

Me and my mum share a "phobia" (more of a disgust mechanism than a true phobia) which could well have been passed down through nurture rather than nature but you didn't specify genetic inheritance.

Painful periods (women only!).

I know what you mean. My sister has had what the doctor called "pre-cancerous" ovarian cysts removed. So far, I have been lucky in that respect. On my paternal grandmother's side, my grandmother had a hystie when I was about 4 yrs old (wasn't ever told anything except that it was "woman problems"), a sister of hers (great aunt) died of either ovarian or uterine cancer. This happened when I was a child & was never told conclusively what type of cancer it was, except that it was "woman cancer."

It's hard to say. Plenty of my relatives have (or had) serious medical conditions, but no two of them had the same one, as far as I know. My grandfather died of a heart aneurism, my uncle has diabetes (and heart problems), my cousin has Crone's disease, my aunt had Multiple Sclerosis, my grandmother has Alzheimer's, and my mother only has one working kidney, although that goes back to childhood illness. The only thing that seems not to run in my family is cancer, at least so far. I don't know about any generations further back than my grandparents.

I think disease can be manifested into the generations in different ways, diabetes, hypoglycemia, are the same, but different degrees. I bought a book called the "Eat Right for (4) your Type." It's about blood types. Very interesting. For every blood type there are different medical risks. For instance, a Type O person has a medical risk of blood clotting disorders, inflammatory diseases (arthritis, low thyroid production, ulcers, allergies. Certain foods inhibit the functioning of the thyroid for instance.Type A has medical risks of heart disease, cancer, anemia, liver and gallbladder disorders, type 1 diabetes. Certain foods are damaging to Type A's. inhibits the body's functioning. Type B's medical risks are type 1 diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, auto immune disorders - Lou Gehrig's disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis. Certain foods can damage the functioning of the body. Type AB's medical risks are heart disease, cancer, anemia. Again, there are foods that can cause damage to the body. I would recommend the book to give ourselves a better chance at health. Also, remember, the physical can cause mental disease, and visa versa, the mental can cause physical disease. Our emotions can affect our health, positive or negative. There are so many facits that determine health, our heredity being but one.
