The worst is a sunburn on the face and head, or if a large portion of my body is sunburned. Blisters are really bad, too, but I have only blistered a few times.

I hate being hot. I really try hard not to get burned, because my skin is so fair. The best remedy for suburn is wallowing in a tub full of cold milk. Aaaah!

Other: Knowing that it increases my chances or getting skin cancer. I am very fair and burn easily - I ALWAYS use tons of sunscreen.

Mainly the fact that I have that type of fair skin that burn extremely easily. When I was a teenager, I fell asleep in the sun for a half hour while wearing a one-piece bathing suit with a low-cut back. I ended up with a second-degree sunburn and in the hospital on my stomach (I HATE sleeping on my stomach). It took nearly a year for the discoloration to go away and now I am in the high-risk category for skin cancer! * frown *

The peeling. The redness bothers me, but if I am burned, it only lasts a few days. My skin has only peeled once from a sunburn, and it was awful, because the rest of my skin was dark and the peeled part was lighter.

Blisters. I now try to avoid the sun at all costs but I've still got a tan. BTW, research has shown that people who don't go into the sun at all get more skin cancer than those who go into the sun moderately.

but the unevenness of the tan can be a bummer too.

But here's one anyway. http://www.paralite.com/naturalmedicine.htm Full spectrum light is natural light or sunlight. I read this in a scientific paper and haven't been able to locat the article on the internet. If you use your search engine you will probably find more sites. I haven't got the time.
natsim
(reply to kaleb777) posted 1-Aug-2001 6:50pm
I used to work in this field of research, and the light exposure they are talking about is not equivalent to getting suntanned or sunburned. The only important exposure to full spectrum light for these effects is through your eyes, to signal to the pituitary gland that it is daylight, and switch off melatonin production.

Whatever. I do realise that the ideal level of sun exposure should not result in sunburn, however I have read that people who spend no time in sunlight are getting skin cancer in places that have never seen the sun (the bottom of a foot in one instance). The article I read showed figures for people who spend all day outside, those who spend some time in the sun, and those who never go into the sun. The highest skin cancer rates were found in those who were in the sun all the time, then those who were not in the sun at all. The lowest cancer rates were found in those who had moderate exposure to the sun. I can only tell you what I've read. I can't help if you think I'm lying for whatever reason. I really don't care anymore what people think of what I believe. Vitamin D production is also important and some skin exposure is necessary and healthy. I wonder if you've heard of any research that shows people who use some forms of sunscreen have actually shown an increase in skin cancer? This was mentioned on Ch 10 news a few months ago but I have been unable to find anything about it. It's interesting that a lot of research paid for by sunscreen producers shows that humans should use sunscreen whenever they go into the sun, even for a short while because supposedly any sun exposure on our skin is bad for us.
natsim
(reply to kaleb777) posted 2-Aug-2001 6:55pm
kaleb, I don't think you're lying! I have learned to be very sceptical of research unless I have read the article and assessed it myself... it's part of my job, and I'm sorry if I came across as mistrusting - it's only the research that I'm cautious about, not you!
It's interesting that you ask about sunscreen, because as I'm sure you know, vitamin D is also really important for good bone density, and they've found that elderly people with less exposure to the sun tend to have a lower bone density. It's been suggested than that sunscreen may also prevent the beneficial effects of the sun on bone density... but never really proven. The only thing I'd heard about the sunscreen and skin cancer is the potential for some older sunscreens to contain some carcinogenic ingredients - I never got to follow up on it, so who knows if it was true. Frankly, I prefer a T-shirt to sunscreen anyday!

I think we can agree that (like most things) it's all about moderation - a little sun is good, but too much is bad. Kind of like red wine!! Or chocolate...

You're probably right about the carcinogenic sunscreen because now I think about it the news item did not say people were only getting skin cancer. They were getting cancer of everything. I too am skeptical about research and tend to look at who is promoting the results before I interpret them. Moderation is great isn't it? Without that little philosophy I would never touch chocolate * smile * . I didn't want to sound weird or frustrated before. It's sometimes hard to talk this way and not misinterpret the spirit behind some of the things I read. I think you handled me admirably!

THE ITCHING!!!! We seem to forget that part; it happens a day or two after a bad burn. It's an itch that seems to come from under the skin and you have to keep rubbing it until it quiets down. I speak from recent experience. We have just come back from our vacation and we went whale watching, picture this; beautiful sunny day, on a boat, hair in the wind etc... No wonder fishermen have skin like leather!
