If offered "Coffee, tea or milk?", what is the order of your preference?

"Coffee, tea, or milk?" was a slogan for an airline in the 1970's when I was a child (I think?!). The phrase haunts me to this very day.

I'll pretend I'm on a plane then. Coffee first, cause it's most likely to be better than the tea. I'm used to pretty good tea and Lipton just isn't worth drinking now. I'd generally rather have some kind of filtered or sparkling water though.

Only if the milk is 1% fat or less.

I'm allergic to milk and tea tastes like dirty water... I guess that would leave coffee for the "best" by default.

...voting per the context in which this choice is generally offered. "Coffee, tea, or *me*?" * wink *

I can't have anything with caffeine so I would have to order decaf everything & take milk only as a last resort. Wish you had offered water...my usual.

The foreground and background colors on the choices are almost the same so I can't read the choices. Ah, I told Netscape to ignore your colors and use the defaults and now I can read it.

Is this 1.0 for best, .5 for in between and 0 for worst?
**bill: Sorry, I'll try to be more clear. Let's say everyone picked coffee as their favorite beverage (as every right-thinking person should * smile * What would the ranking be? Is the ranking dependent on the number of voters? the number of options? It looks like the range is 1 to 3 (for this question, at least) so I'm assuming that the highest rank is equivalent to the number of options and the lowest rank will be 1 (or zero). Basically, I'm trying to determine the math that's going on behind the scenes.
**bill: Ah, thanks. A couple of suggestions (being blithely unaware of CGI, I don't know how hard this is):
Allow people to rank two items the same. This will require that we, the users, only use this when we really can't choose between two or else it would defeat the purpose of the ranking style survey. You could decide if you would use that rank's point value for both items or the average of the one you chose and the one you didn't. (i.e. I choose coffee as best and tea and milk as both worst. You could add three points to the coffee pool and either 1 or 1.5 to the tea and milk pools.)
...or...
Allow an "indifferent" option where you do not count towards the average. That would require you to keep track of how many people voted on each option as opposed to how many voted on the survey, so that might get a little hairy.
Woo hoo! User names are now auto-linked and text editing in lynx works gracefully.
Bill, you are a god...

Coffee, milk, then tea. Ranked answers. Most cool.

I remember the Hughes Air West slogan from the 70s, before they got bought by Pacific Southwest Airlines. Well, I remember one of their many slogans, to wit: "Yes, we like bananas in our soup". Strange guy, that Howard.

Coffee was my first choice. Choosing between tea or milk depends on whether I want something hot or cold to drink. I do use milk in both coffee and tea so I guess I get more milk than either of the other.

hmmm.....i got yelled at because I didn't think there was a "worst" between tea and milk. I unchecked everything. so sue me!

nope! That didn't work either. I guess I'm not allowed my opinion....have to lie to get this one through.

****bill...ok...see what you can do. How accurate can the statistics be if the answers aren't accurate? nice job :)

Whoa! When did we get ranked responses? I'm curious if they'll prevent me from selecting all three as "1 (best)" but I'm too lazy to fix my vote after. Sorry this comment has nothing to do with the survey...

i think it would be really cool if we could rank the surveys themselves on a scale of 1 to 10 instead of rating them good, bad, or no opinion.

Its depends on what time of day it is and my mood. Coffee and milk are definitely breakfast drinks with me. Tea is more of a lunch and dinner drink.

I like the idea of multi-pick rankings but a) there should be a way to NOT rank certain answers (I don't like milk, but coffee/tea is an entirely situation-dependant ranking for me) - maybe a "no ranking" option in the combobox? Also, when I tried to rank just one and got an error message, my comment didn't persist through to the new form.

**Bill: Much better! I ranked milk as 3, and didn't do the other two. What about a javascript validator which asks "Are you sure?" and just lets you click "OK" instead of having to go through another page and check a checkbox?
How did you decide to deal with the math for unranked answers?
Oh, also how come some people's names (dpolicar, eris, ron2112) are underlined? Ah, I see, hiders... cool!

of course I like milk in my coffee and sugar in my tea and coffee in my milk if it's frozen into icecream and tea cold is fine by itself and and milk is best with some chocolate, but so is coffee, also known as mocha......... : )~

I love tea, but only when it's made a certain way - so I hardly ever get it when I go out. Coffee can be good if I'm prepared for it (for being wired). Milk is always good if I'm hungry.

Milk is not only Worst -- it is practically Never! - reality - I'm really building up my reputation with you! I'm a morning person who won't drink milk (although I didn't know there was a religious connotation to that!) heathen, indeed! reality - I'm not lactose intolerant ... my calcium comes from broccoli and lowfat yogurt (yes, I've heard the one about how cottage cheese is spoiled milk and yogurt is spoiled cottage cheese .. ha ha). Lately, I've been taking a calcium supplement as well. My sister was a big milk drinker. The week she left home, 3 gallons of milk spoiled in the fridge! Maybe the underlying cause of my milk aversion is just that I didn't want to be like her!

Milk rules, but I'd prefer 2%
*Resy: heathen
*Resy: actually, I am using the definition of "Barbarous; unenlightened" which fits with the morning person thing... * cool smile * it was an automatic reaction, I have liked and drunk milk for so long I can't understand how people can not like it unless they are lactose intolerant. how do you get calcium?
*Resy: okay.. as long as you are getting calcium. * cool smile * I find that when I am floating through life without thought (as seems to be getting easier and easier, I am sure i'll self destruct or become mundane soon) I am easily confused by the fact that not everyone else knows what I do or reacts the same way..

I don't drink coffee, so it would certainly be last. Milk needs to be fresh from the refrigerator, or it tastes sour to me, so it is 2 on the list. This leaves Tea as #1 by default more than anything else.

After reading everyone's answers, I agree. I wish water had been a choice. My standard response to the question, "what can I get for you to drink this morning?", is this- "coffee and water".
