| daver | posted 14-Aug-1998 8:46pm Abstain...First, I can't vote. Second, I don't live in Puerto Rico, so it's not for me to say. If they want to be a state, I have no problems with that. |
| Ynot | posted 15-Aug-1998 9:06am kick 'em loose and let them pay their own way for a change |
| Timmi | posted 15-Aug-1998 12:44pm I would vote for Puerto Rican self-determination. |
| milktree | posted 15-Aug-1998 5:41pm It would even make a decent flag! *** Bill: What about all that "taxation without representation is tyranny" stuff?*** Bill: oh, I mis-understood your answer. |
| jettles | posted 15-Aug-1998 5:43pm i think that the people of puerto rico should vote to choose between independence or statehood. |
| Mimi | posted 15-Aug-1998 6:18pm I voted for complete independence, but if that is not possible, they should have statehood & pay taxes just the same as the rest of us. It is not right for them to be treated as a territory. |
| kirst | posted 15-Aug-1998 9:55pm If Puerto Rico is going to get the benefits, they should be a state. |
| jzp | posted 16-Aug-1998 8:11am The States should migrate towards autonomy via the commonwealth status. the federal government is increasingly irrelevant. |
| eris | posted 16-Aug-1998 1:26pm Kind of depends what the people there want, if you ask me. |
| emily | posted 16-Aug-1998 2:34pm bunch of good for nothing, free-loading ingrates! Line 'em up and shoot 'em all!!:) |
| Gamera | posted 16-Aug-1998 2:41pm What does the populace of Puerto Rico want? The way this survey is worded supports the common opinion that Puerto Rico is getting a "free ride," but there must be another side. What other obligations do they have as a Commonwealth in exchange for these "federal benefits?" What obligations or rights of Statehood do they lose for lack of taxes? They currently have no representation in Congress, right? Would the general populace of P.R. prefer to have a vote in the government whose military has control? |
| phi | posted 16-Aug-1998 10:42pm That is, if I were a resident of PR... |
| reality | posted 17-Aug-1998 9:37am Make em a state or set them loose. simple giving federal benefits without having to pay the taxes is silly. |
| dpolicar | posted 17-Aug-1998 9:42am I picked "abstain," but what I'd actually do is call my Puerto Rican aunt and ask her what she thought, then make my decision based on that. |
| doom | posted 17-Aug-1998 10:17am Let them decide their fate. |
| lisashea | posted 17-Aug-1998 12:18pm I would make them independent, although I don't know if they could survive financially without our support. I suppose we'd still send them money anyway. They're just too far away for us to try to roll them in with our state needs, they have all sorts of particular things that they need that don't affect us at all. I guess I would have voted for Hawaii to become independent, too, for that reason. |
| anonymous | posted 17-Aug-1998 8:32pm How about we all become states in the world government? |
| jjg | posted 18-Aug-1998 1:51pm Complete independence. ***Anonymous: only if the United States is full control, never has to give up it's military, and can generally boss everyone else around. |
| glen | posted 18-Aug-1998 2:23pm I abstain due to lack of sufficient knowledge of the situation. I do know that in addition to not paying taxes / getting drafted, they also don't have a right to vote or a vote from their rep in congress. It seems to me that if they really want to be a state, they should be allowed to. We should get this over with and return to taking over the rest of the world with our Irresistable Media Blitz. |
| bill | posted 19-Aug-1998 6:19am I think we should start taxing them, then let them become a state if they want to. I'm shocked to hear we don't tax them - we must, somehow. ** Milktree, right! I think if we start to tax Puerto Rico maybe they'll get motivated (like we did) to either join us fully or break off on their own (either would be fine with me). |
| nbarone | posted 10-Sep-1998 1:07am are you asking me how i would vote if i was a puerto rican citizen? if so (and thats what i assumed), i'd vote for independence. if you are asking what i, as a u.s. citizen, want puerto rico's status to be, then my answer is that it's none of my business, they can vote to be whatever they want to be and i'll be just as happy. |
