I read rather slowly (~30 pages/hour) and I seem to have less motivation to read than most of my friends, but I wouldn't call it a disability.

If it is a subject that in not that interested in, I find that the words have a tendency to run around the page

I have trouble reading things that are more than five feet away from me without my glasses, because I am nearsighted.

Technically, my being near-sighted is a visual problem that would make reading difficult more than 5 INCHES away, but it's completely corrected with glasses.

I have trouble reading road signs without my glasses! Lots of very circuitous journeys due to that before I went to get tested!

Sometimes I misread words for naughty words. That is just because I have a dirty mind. * wink *

I have trouble reading certain books- it has to do with the text layout and the line spacing. I'm mildly dyslexic and if the font is wrong for me, it will take physical effort to keep the words from running together into a big pile in the middle of the page.

I wear glasses, and have trouble reading some things without them.

I am numerically dyslexic.
It has even impacted my love life.
Have you ever tried to 96?

I can't read things that are far away. And I can't read without good enough light.

Actually, I suffer from "middle-aged bi-focalism". A disastrously debilitating disease which has robbed me of my impishly endearing good looks, since I can't seem to find a pair of glasses that actually complement my face.

(Now there's a straight line if I ever hear one.)

I am severely near-sighted (myopia) and have congenital cataracts as well (because of where they are located, they are currently inoperable). Without my glasses I am legally blind and even with my glasses, my vision no longer can be corrected to 20-20 any longer.

(reply to Jemmy) posted 13-Jul-2001 3:48pm
I did. I knew both Billy Carter and Milly the Dog, but neither could do a damn thing about my lack of vision.

"I don't have trouble reading" is a no answer

"I have trouble reading at certain times

I have trouble reading certain subjects
I used to have trouble reading" are the yes answers.

Please don't shout. * frown *

Sometimes I can't make sense of a paragraph. Quite often my ability to read non-fiction endures for only 40 minutes before it becomes babble and I have to keep rereading the same passage. ADD. Usually though, when something's complex, I have to read it (listening is worse). I think in the form of maps and wiring diagrahms. Some people build up, but I need the big picture first so I can place all the ideas correctly on my map.

My vision is Left 20-20 right 20-80. With glasses that corrects to 20-13 / 20-13, in other words practically superhuman. I'm glad because almost my entire thinking is in the form of color, texture, and geometry.

Glasses can look cool or sweet. I like people with glasses. One way I pick glasses is to find a store with a huge selection, grab my 30 favorite pairs off the wall, put them on the table, close my eyes, then holding one pair at a time open them and ask for a first reaction on who would wear this: A 40 year old librarian, Eric Clapton, a failed hollywood starlet, a bird loving archaeologist, etc. Next with the surviving candidates comes the flash open the eyes whili wearing them in the mirror to get an instant impression on how 'you' look in them: too much hair, fat face, 40 year old librarian, etc. Another trick is to show up with a mantra like 'Alive art angel'. I find that when do that at a thrift store I find some incredible clothes. I want contacts so I can afford to wear a variety of sunglasses without having to sacrifice vision for aesthetics.
I presumed you had glasses anyhow. You'd look good in some Perry Ellis designs.
96. That's like a push-me-pull-you. {I know you secretly carry the torch for Dr. Doolittle}.

Oh. That's too bad. I know a lot of people who have been helped even a little by contacts. I think I'd definatley prefer contacts to glasses, except the thought of touching my eye freaks me out.

I'm a slow reader, I think because of a concentration problem.

No problem with my eyesight though. I'm 40 years old and it's 20/15.

20/13 20/13 here (corrected), otherwise 20/20 20/80. Is that 20/15 both eyes, no glasses?

(reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 4-Aug-2001 5:58pm
Yep, it's without glasses. I don't recall if that was both eyes, or if one is 20/20, but I feel very fortunate. My mom and both my siblings wear glasses. My dad still doesn't wear glasses, although he finally started using the non-prescription magnifying ones for reading at the age of 70.
