| thrifthtml | posted 8-Jul-2001 10:55am has puff daddy ever had original music? |
| Jemmy | posted 8-Jul-2001 11:13am It depends on the song. |
| Enheduanna | posted 8-Jul-2001 11:25am It depends on the artist and the song. |
| daver | posted 8-Jul-2001 11:57am I like to hear a new take on an old song. I'm not fond of a carbon copy. |
| SueBee | posted 8-Jul-2001 1:34pm It depends on the song and the artist. Sometimes it's a good thing and sometimes they really ruin the song for me. |
| Biggles | posted 8-Jul-2001 1:50pm Sometimes it can be okay. Sometimes it can be awful. Like Madonna's version of what's-it-called! (American Pie?) |
| mandy | posted 8-Jul-2001 2:00pm I've heard some pretty cool covers. Some funny ones too!!!!!! |
| jkiehart | posted 8-Jul-2001 7:06pm Depends on the artist covering. Madonna singing Don McLean's "American Pie"? No. No no no. Bad. Guns and Roses covering Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door"? Great. Love it. I love good artists covering Bob Dylan songs. I hate meaningless pop stars ruining something good. Don't get me started on "sampling." Ugh! |
| mary | posted 8-Jul-2001 7:40pm The Stones started out covering a lot of songs (& still do) and most of every ones favorite artists probably cover songs & the listeners don't even know about it. Take all of your blues players for instance, there are many many songs that they cover and that other people cover from them. |
| callen610 | posted 8-Jul-2001 7:42pm I like some cover songs ("Lady Marmalade"!) and hate some other cover songs (Mariah Carey's "Without You" was AWFUL compared to Harry Nilssons original.) It depends on how well it is done and with how much respect to the original artist. Mostly, I dislike them, especially when mixed into other genres. I HATE Destiny's Child stealing Stevie Nicks music.... |
| callen610 | (reply to Biggles) posted 8-Jul-2001 7:44pm Oh that Madonna song was AWFUL!! (But I hated the original, so maybe I'm biased.) |
| jettles | posted 9-Jul-2001 5:59am i don't mind but there aren't many that i listen to, maybe a few. |
| Brian | posted 9-Jul-2001 8:40am They are called renditions. Some better, some worse than the originals. Historically, there are examples of each. However, purists always argue for the original. George W. Bush is a rendition. Or at least, it sounds like the same old song to me. |
| thrifthtml | (reply to Brian) posted 9-Jul-2001 8:53am oh, i haven't ever heard anybody call it a rendition. i think the more popular term would be a 'cover'...but y'know, whatever floats your boat |
| Brian | (reply to thrifthtml) posted 9-Jul-2001 9:53am I must be getting older than I thought. Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary & Thesaurus. "Rendering: to produce a copy or version of" Thus rendition is a copy or version of. |
| Zang | posted 9-Jul-2001 10:06am It depends. Some artists cover songs without adding anything. A lot of those do nothing else. I see nothing wrong with an artist, who mostly does their own material, throwing in a cover from time to time when they have a different way of doing it. |
| Pooh_Bear | posted 9-Jul-2001 10:12am Has anyone seen Cover Wars on VH1? |
| kaleb777 | posted 9-Jul-2001 10:47am If they do a better version they're OK, if they do a crap version they suck. |
| Gamera | posted 9-Jul-2001 12:50pm Sometimes it's really wonderful- there are musicians who I think bring new depths to the work of other song-writers by reinterpreting that work through there own voice. Usually, though, even if I really like the covers, I'll start wondering what that person would do on their own. Copying and reinterpreting old-master paintings and styles is a valuable and important part of learning to paint- the difference between what they did and what you do, when you're trying to copy faithfully, is the beginning of your own style. Likewise I think it's probably valuable for musicians to cover each other's tunes and learn and develop from them- whether they're going to write their own work later, or not. |
| ASexyBabe | posted 10-Jul-2001 9:47am bleck!!! |
| Oscar | posted 10-Jul-2001 12:26pm sounds fine |
| natsim | posted 10-Jul-2001 8:10pm It depends on how good the cover version is. |
| confetti | posted 10-Jul-2001 9:33pm There is nothing wrong with them. Ideally they should cover others' songs and compose their own, also, but very few covered songs are bad. I just realized that, actually! A few of my current favorites; ' Angel' , Shaggy...I also like ' Missing You', Puff Daddy (sorry, P. DIDDY) and Faith Evans, although that was really only a sample from ' Every Breath you Take' , it was still really well done. |
| phi | posted 11-Jul-2001 1:34am I really enjoy hearing a different take on a song. Often it will reveal aspects of the song that I hadn't noticed before, like say the Laibach cover of the Beatles' album Let It Be, minus the title track, or Cake's cover of I Will Survive. Other times it's just amusing, like the Austin Lounge Lizards' cover of Brain Damage. And sometimes it's just plain better than the original, like pretty much any cover of a Bob Dylan tune. |
| Cleo | posted 11-Jul-2001 6:31am Dang rip off's!!!!! Some of the remakes of certain songs should just be left alone. At times, a cover band can just ruin a good song. Then again, like the remake of the Beatle song "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" remade by Joe Cocker was a vast improvement on the original cut.Likewise the cut of 'A little Help From my Friends' also a classic remake by Joe. Then there's the take by Areosmith of another Beatle song, which was actually much better than the Beatles version(sorry John & Paul). & Elton John, who remade his own song, yuck I liked the original better. However,Eric Clapton's variation of LAYLA was really something to behold, seeing as how the original came out in the 70 & it was a quick up beat version. As opposed to the recent remake in 98/99 which was ultimately much slower paced.I liked them both equally, but reminisce to the 70 version more. The man is a genius!!! Some remakes are great but other's,ohmigod leave the dang song alone. Some of it is likened to that of nails on a chalk board. "If it aint broke don't fix it" |
| happyme | posted 11-Jul-2001 8:40am I have no idea what you're talking about. |
| juliw | posted 11-Jul-2001 7:15pm It depends/ Sometimes, they totally change the tune, or add words that really don't belong. And some songs have been so overdone. I remember when you could hardly turn on the TV without seeing someone singing "Feelingts". I STILL hate that song! |
| jkiehart | (reply to confetti) posted 12-Jul-2001 1:06pm "Angel"??? No way! Really? "...Closer than my peeps you are to me"??? Closer... than my... peeps??? That is, hands down, the lamest line from any song ever recorded in the course of musical history. I cringe! |
| romkey | posted 12-Jul-2001 5:51pm it entirely depends on the artist and the song. For instance, Locust's cover of Depeche Mode's "Master and Servant", and the Steve and Edie version of "Blackhole Sun" are superb. The world really doesn't need another "All Along The Watchtower" or "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" though |
| natsim | (reply to romkey) posted 12-Jul-2001 10:23pm But Michael Hedges' version of "All Along the Watchtower" is amazing.... |
| confetti | (reply to jkiehart) posted 13-Jul-2001 2:14am Okay, okay, you've got a point. But that guy, dick that he is, has a smile and voice that will make up for it all |
| romkey | (reply to natsim) posted 13-Jul-2001 7:11am I don't mean to say there aren't any good "All Along The Watchtower"s... just that there are so many of them... who need another new one? |
| jkiehart | (reply to confetti) posted 13-Jul-2001 12:28pm I hope that one day... You'll be close to him... Than his... Peeps. God I hate that word! Good luck with your new beau! It's wonderful when someone you like likes you back!!!!! |
| confetti | (reply to jkiehart) posted 13-Jul-2001 1:42pm Yes. Thanks. |
| natsim | (reply to romkey) posted 15-Jul-2001 7:38pm I know, I'm just teasing. We don't *need* any more, but I enjoy being surprised by new interpretations of songs that I'm almost sick of. (although I did just hear the new cover of that Phil Collins song - Another day in paradise, or whatever it's called - and I REALLY didn't need that!) |
| RickMiles | posted 24-Jul-2001 9:50pm It all depends on how the song is done. If it is done exactly the same as the original(Luther and Mariah doing "Endless Love") then I do not see the point except to glorify your voice(a la Mariah. I really hate her) |
| iworshipblink | posted 4-Aug-2001 9:09pm i like cover songs, because some songs from a long time ago have good lyrics, but i cant stand the music |
