What are the best box office movies that are in theatres right now?

Any suggestions on which movies are a "must see?"

I'm not really a movie-goer, so I don't know what's up with movies at the mo.

Haven't gone to the theater in ages, and I won't either. I am pretty disappointed w/the crap Hollywood is making

I think you'd like Moulin Rouge. It's very silly! * smile *

the movies making the most money last weekend were "AI" and "The Fast and the Furious". Is that what you mean by best box office?

I'd say that Moulin Rouge is, hands down, the best movie playing at this point. Memento, too, if it's still running.

What does the question mean? Do you want to know how much money movies are making, or which are the best?

I may wind up seeing it when it comes out on video, but probably not because I selected it.

Song catcher was excellent. I have quite an affinity for the life portrayed in it. It's not at all cheesy like the poster, but had excellent location, atmosphere, story, and decent cinematography. It's rare to to find movies about alternate worlds, rarer to find sweet ones, and rarer yet to find ones that actually existed.

I have no idea what the box office is playing (in the U.S., I presume). In Costa Rica 'Rocky and Bullwinkle' is just opening. * raspberry *

Your a few months behind LA then, better than Alaska which is almost a year behind. * laughing out loud * Maybe you can cruise old movie surveys to get reviews. If you live near hollywood you can get the videos {stamped 'promotional use only'} before it even reaches the theater sometimes.

What do you mean? Because someone else chose it?
Zang

Yeah, I rarely pick Hollywood stuff at the video store. Usually if I do, it is something with a Canadian comic actor in it.

Swordfish is pretty good...I just saw it.
I've heard that Atlantis is good too.
I'll tell you about Tomb Raider after I see it, but I bet it's a good one too.

I loathe going to movies. So, I couldn't tell you. Someone told me Shreck was good, but I don't believe that.

Tomb Raider was pretty good. The first half of A.I was pretty good but I wanted to run out of the theatre during the last half (Stanley Kubrick does that to me...ugh...)

Traffic, Pollock, CTHD, all of which are in second run theaters in the US now, but are definitely must-see films! Memento was really really good, too, just not up there with the other three in my mind. It's hard to find still playing in the US Northeast, thought there are a few places left. Actually, I don't know if Pollock would really do it for most people- but it really turned my world upside-down.

So why did you like it?

It's an Australian movie.... although it's partly funded by Hollywood. It was filmed in Australia, by an Australian director, with Australian musicians, costume designers, set designers, composers etc etc. So it's worth a try!

Does it have any depth of story, any psychodrama, any spiritual under pinnings? The review I read said it looked great, but that's all it had going for it.

it's full of psychodrama, but I don't equate psychodrama with spiritual underpinnings... it's fundamentally not a drama, but I think it's a great piece of art.
natsim
(reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 3-Jul-2001 6:07pm
It's basically a bit of a romp, but an exciting and engaging and hilarious one.
The obvious spiritual underpinning is that the most important things in life are "Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love", the most important being Love. With a capital L too, I think * wink *
It's rare for me to enjoy a movie that's little more than a beautiful story, but it's really extremely well done.

It had nothing to do with my liking Pollock's paintings (which I never really have), and everything to do with watching his struggle to work out the relationships in his life, particularly that with his partner and that with his family, in a way trying to deal with or not deal with those problems through his painting, and through drug use (alcohol). I felt that the movie did a stupendous job at making no character a villain or a hero. It neither apologized for Jackson's alcoholism, nor does it make that the focus of criticism. It was a very good way for me to bring out some questions about what is important to me, and why I paint, what I hope to get from it, what the nature of artistic success is and is not, and the (possible) effects of focusing very tightly on one aspect of one's life.

Yeah, that's why I go in the afternoon. Less crowded and less rude people. Talking during movies is a big pet peeve of mine.

Thanks. It was the first movie I saw with my career artist girlfriend, so I'm sure it reflected a lot of our common stuff too, especially potential relationship problems.

If you are referring to Tim Burton, yes. I like his dark way of looking at things. The sets & makeup of Planet of the Apes was well done-the acting & plot on the other hand-disappointing! Maybe it was the genre-but it wasn't up to Tim Burton's other pictures.

Kate, I'll have to agree with you on Rush Hour 2, usually part one is always better. Not in this case, part one was good, but part two was funnier. I hoping for a part three, I don't want them to get to carried away though.

I think what made part 2 so funny was that Chris Tucker was so out of his element.
