Handel's Messiah, if you count Handel as English. Otherwise, the Enigma Variations by Elgar is the first that springs to mind.

Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis by R.Vaughan Williams.
I haven't heard it for years, so I don't know why it popped into my head, especially since I'm currently rehearsing "the Lark Ascending" by the same composer. Strange.

Sorry folks! I know this isn't very fun, but I felt compelled to do it because it has been obsessing me for the last couple of years. I bought this book called "British Music of Our Time (1946)" and some of the stuff they were saying in there, I thought was really off the mark. I felt that I had to get some kind of consensus as to which English composers and works were popular, or widely known now-a-days. I drew my own conclusions, but I thought I would run it by you guys, and see what popped up... * smile *

So how does what you found here compare to what the book was saying or to your own conclusions?
