Yes, and if I don't get off this damn computer and go to bed, I'm going to be tired again tomorrow. I have no self control!

I don't know what happened. I was doing really well for awhile getting to bed at a decent hour, and I woke up feeling rested. It was great, but I guess it was just another one of my phases. They never last long, especially if it's something good.

This was one of those mornings where I stay half asleep trying to choose a form of consciousness, much like trying to pick out what to wear on a bad day. It's easier to access these different modes when half asleep. There was a time years ago when I never wanted to get out of bed until I could figure out my ultimate form of consciousness while I had a chance. I understand the process is the ultimate form now.

Exactly! It's the people who don't vote who seem to spend the most time whinging about who got in! I practically had to push my brother out of the door yesterday half an hour before the polls closed at 10pm He's a first time voter and I can't wait until I can vote - it's like the mark of citizenship (except we're "royal-subjects" not citizens - bleugh! * frown * )

The results were pretty much as expected. Labour won another landslide (looking like 6 less seats right now), the Conservatives stayed about the same and the Liberal Democrats gained 5 I think. I'm pleased that the Lib. Dems. gained some seats - I don't think they're anything like able to govern yet but I would like to see them continue to become more powerful and possibly become the official opposition.

Best bit is that William Hague (leader of the opposition) resigned this morning * smile * Actually, he was very good for Labour's campaign - every time he opened his mouth he gave votes away! He's wanted to be PM since he was a little kid and even gave a speech at the Tory Party conference when he was 16 - now he's going to have to go back to being a member of the Shadow Cabinet (probably - I can't see him being a backbencher again).

The worst thing is the number of votes the British National Party got. In Oldham (where there have just been some race riots) they got 16.7% of the vote. Not enough to win it but much higher than anyone ever expected. The BNP are pretty much the most right-wing party in the UK - they're basically fascists and it's worrying that everywhere they stood they did quite well.

And the turnout was down from last time. 59%!!! That's the lowest since 1918 - 1997's was low at 71%. 41% of people couldn't be bothered to vote - it's hard to understand!

You are so right. My sugars are slowly coming down. It's been two days on the medicine and I'm seeing results. Being chronically ill sucks so bad. I wish I could just be normal and not have to stop and prick my fingers a couple of times a day and worry about side effects from the pills and I want to eat what I want and drink copious amounts of beer....sadly those days are over. I've snapped out of my diabetes denial and decided to do the right thing. It is so hard. I know I shouldn't complain, there are so many people in the world sicker than me who don't even have a little pill to take that could help them live a long and healthy life...so I should be happy. I'll adjust. I just need to grumble about it for a few days. I'm like that.
 * raspberry *

Thanx for your words of wisdom. My father lost his leg to diabetes in his 60's. It had gone undiagnosed because, like me, he hated going to the doctor's. It went downhill from there as he developed colon and lung cancer and passed away last year. My mother was just diagnosed with mild diabetes last week and put on medication. She has already had a stroke, open heart surgery to replace a heart valve and a pacemaker and she takes so many pills every day she rattles when she walks. I guess I should consider myself lucky I only have diabetes.

The BNP does sound rather scary. I think the Liberal Democrats need to put a lot of effort into reaching the people who haven't been voting (if there's any chance those folks could be convinced to vote for them) and then maybe they can really make some progress. They'd better get to them before the BNP does!

Perhaps instead of playing catch up to your bodies demands, you would feel more in control by surpassing them. Changing your diet can change your perception, for instance drinking water all day instead of coffee (like I do * frown * ) When I had my awakening (I think I mentioned this) I gave up most of my coffee, sugar, tobacco, alcohol, meat and felt quite refreshed. Before that I would eat a whole german chocolate cake, given the chance. Now, I enjoy those things on special occasions (well I'm still a coffee and cig addict) but I don't have cravings for anything and can put anything away without a second thought. I found varieties of rice to have the same degree of variety and sumptuousness as the exotic junk food I had before. Now I cook exotically, but I cook to eat, and am not a slave to my desire. It opens your mind up to other awareness. When you leave alcohol alone for a year or two, you'll probably wonder what it's appeal was when you take it up again. I'm not saying 'be like me', I'm just suggesting you can get far more out of this ordeal than merely 'doing as you have to' to survive. Everything can be looked upon as adventurous.

If the Lib Dems can keep building on their successes they could go far. We weren't too sure about Charles Kennedy at first because he had such a different leadership style to the others and we didn't think it would work. He's come across as a sweet, honest guy though and I think that got him a lot of votes - he's not like most politicians!

I didn't vote because none of the parties represent my beliefs sufficiently for me to be able to support them. I couldn't vote Conservative because I don't think they're anywhere near being competent to govern at the moment, I couldn't vote LibDem because I strongly disagree with some of their key policies and I couldn't vote Labour because they're far too anti-libertarian. I'm not whining about Labour getting back in - I think they're probably the best option, in the sense of being the least worst, but there's no way that I could give them any positive support.

Just don't complain when they try to take over the world! * smile *

Seriously though, I think that at the moment there is so much dissatisfaction with the political parties that most voters voted for the least bad rather than the best. That could well increase depending on who takes over as leader of the Conservative Party - Anne Widdecombe has already said she's considering it - talk about a way to completely destruct the party.

Well, in this case the result was pretty much a foregone conclusion, and even if by some miracle it had gone the other way and the Conservatives had won I wouldn't really have minded too much, so in this case I really didn't care. I think a lot of people felt the same way - the turnout was the lowest since 1918!

Now, of course, politicians are bleating about the low turnout, and making suggestions on things to encourage more people to vote, such as having polling booths in supermarkets and making the voting period longer. All of which is completely missing the point - I could have voted if I wanted to, I chose not to vote as a protest against the current state of British politics. If they'd put a polling booth in my local supermarket I would have just walked past it.

I was thinking to send you some ancient writings of mine from back when I was undergoing disattachment to food and other vices. I'd forgotten that was indeed a whole phase. In one passage I describe how at the college snack bar, I decided that it would be more responsible to not order my usual coffee or hot cocoa, and instead order a steamed milk. One of the lovely ladies asked if I wanted cocoa in that, another pointe out the honey and nutmeg. I was on a sparkly cloud with what otherwise would have been a drab sugar experience taken for granted. I realize you have more crucial reasons to break your attachments, but I still encourage you to find the freedom and sweetness that comes with spiritually motivated discipline.
Tonight would be a good night to cook a sugar free bananna/yam/date bread loaded in high iron like raisins and dates, and maybe some cranberries served with cream cheese, and restricted to a slice eaten in ritual meditation, not while snacking on the internet. You don't have to forego enjoying scrumptious food, but rather forego consuming it at times when you can't make every bite mystical and delectable (in other words, no chips or soda, even diet versions). Work on enjoying air and water inbetween. You have a cave-water consciousness that wants to nurture you in womb sweetness. You'll have more energy to explore and relish the rest of the world when you break out of that pattern. I need to do that again myself.
