I found a polished green jasper and a green plastic Easter egg when tilling the yard. those seem like happy omens. I have quite a few plants in the house, though a few fail. My african violet hasn't bloomed in quite awhile. I've been making a compost pile, but I realize that it won't have much yield for a year or so, and I'm ready to make a garden of my poor soil now. I suppose I'll have to start small with poor soil type plants. Maybe I'll visit nurseries today. If not, then at least research soil needs for my wish list. Thanks for asking.

(reply to Iseult) posted 8-Jun-2001 7:51am

Yeah, I agree on the roses bit. i also think that they are over rated. In my short 23 years of existence in this life, I have received 2 roses, both from my hubby, and when we got married, my "bouquet" was 2 red roses.SIGH....I would've perferred wildflowers, but we got married on the first day of spring 2000, high up in the mountains of Colorado. It was supposed to be an outdoor thing, but there was a freak snow storm that day, that had dumped over a foot in an hours time!!!
I think that orchids are so magical. There is something really mysterious about them. I too have always been drawn to them!
justjulie
(reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 8-Jun-2001 8:16am

WOW!!! Great finds!!!
Funny you mentioned african violets...I just picked up one 2 days ago. I figured that I would give it a shot again, for I haven't had much luck w/them in the past. I think that this time though, the violet will do better, for I feel that at this point in my life I am more sensitive to it's needs.

Actually, I think that you may want to plant sages and grasses and things this year, Sunflowers too. Such plants really don't need much to thrive, and I think that it would be good to start out with those plants to actually feed your soil. Those plants won't deplete many nutreints. Then come fall time or next spring, you'll be able to turn those plants into your soil along w/ the compost you're creating, to achieve a more "desireable" soil for what you really want. You'll probably have to do this for 2 years, this and next year. i think that if you tried to plant the plants you really want NEXT year, you'll be disappointed w/ the results and wind up wasting your $. Some food stuff crops can work as well if you're interested. Tomatoes and corn will work for sure. Different herbs will work too.
Unfortuately, this will be a process for what your "final" vision is. But, the work that goes into it will be SOOO worth it when the time is right.

Unfortunately, my home base is an apartment from which I've wanted to move since I got here. It's as much for the neighbors as anything else, so I have to find stuff that is immediately self-maintaining too. I have been considering your exact plan though. The whole yard is shaded by the building, fences, and trees unfortunately. This is more of a practice yard.
justjulie
(reply to Iseult) posted 9-Jun-2001 1:05pm

(reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 9-Jun-2001 1:16pm

That's a bummer. But, a practice yard is always fun though. That way you can really play with it, lots of trial and error.
I would love to have a garden, or just a yard for that matter. We live right in the heart of the city, so that makes ANYTHING a little more difficult. The building that we live in is one of the oldest standing buildings in the area, built around 1830. It's wonderful because there are 4 other units besides ours, and we RARELY run into our neighbors. We can pretty much do what we want though. I mean, currently, we have 6 kitties. NOBODY has said a word about them, or will say a word. I thought about a window box for our place, but it would be pretty difficult to attach it to the building. So, for now I've been getting my fix when I go visit my folks. they have just a tad over 10 acres of land, and my mom is bored and wants flowers and veggies and things. So, I've been working w/her to come up w/ a plan best suited for their land. Their soil is VERY rocky, so that takes a lot of work to get those rocks out of the way.

IF you owned it you could reinforce the roof and grow up there. 6 kitties, neat.

yeah, that is an idea. I'm sure that i could work something out w/ our apt. manager, but, he takes his dog up there to do her business, and the other part of the rooftop belongs to our crack head neighbor.

The cats are a lot of fun. It's cool 'cause they all have a totally different personality, even though they came came for the same 2,(we have mom cat and dad cat and their 4 offspring).

All cats have different personalities pretty much. My two litter brothers are quite different. One (Volt) is playful and demands conscious attention. We squirm like river otters and do somersaults. The other (Schism) is conservative (an old soul) and takes up unconscious attention. He likes to demand my chair space. He seems much smarter, for instance sleeping in the bathroom sink when he got fleas. They both love charging through the house and yard. I take them on moonlight walks through the neighborhood.
justjulie
(reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 10-Jun-2001 3:04pm

Cool.
Venus, the mother, is a wise little cat. She is quite intuitive and demands the least attention, she is the talker. Mars, the father, is a talker as well, but needs affection, demands it and will get it. Achilles, the first daughter, is such an interesting mix between ma' and pa'. She is very wise and likes the affection, but is very independent,(I have a really close connection w/ both girls, mostly because of their pregnancies. Achilles gave birth, a hard one, but no survivors.) Damnit, one of the brothers, suits his name. He KNOWS what he is "doing wrong",such as climbing on the screens, but does it anyway. He is the most intellegent of the brothers. Chyna Cat, another brother, is more subdued, but very mysterious. And last is Grunts, he is the baby. He looks almost identical to dad, and requires to be "babied". THey are all so much fun, and their playing styles are very similar, but yet very different. A lot of fun, and I feel very blessed to have these little souls sharing their space w/me.

I once suffered a cat named Killer. His tactics included leaping from side to side while standing on his hind legs, and swiping his claws under your toenails while you watched TV with your shins next to a very sharp edged coffee table. These current guys are my tiger-doves. Rambunctious and cuddly. They only meow when they need some work out of me (except for singing in the shower). There pretty good about baths too. Schism almost goes for swims.

I love it when cats aren't afraid of H2O. A couple of mine right now, enjoy sitting beneath the drip in the bathtub. Also, they like to sit in the tub while I shower, we are lucky enough to have one of those old-time tubs w/ claw feet.
Cats are SO great. I think it's really cool how they react to song. I traveled from Colorado to Wisconsin w/Mars & Venus when they were quite young. The radio in my car didn't work, but the tape player did. So the whole way I'd sing, and they would crawl up on my chest to listen, and give my face a kiss or two.
Your furry friends sound lovely. I'm glad that you are their "mom".
