Aaaaaaaargh! Help?

I am about to do a series of very important exams (biology, chemistry, politics and sociology). What words of wisdom, advice, support (or even mockery) do you have for me?

Ha. We are thinking alike. I would also suggest to Biggles to take a real interest in the material. It's easier to remember stuff if you give yourself reasons to find it interesting. I did really good in sociology, because I found it interesting. Also: Don't worry too much. You also remember better if you aren't fretting.

I just did some exams last week too. This is how I approached it:

1) Pay attention in class. It is a lot easier to learn the material then, than to try to learn from the notes you were taking.
2) Read the textbook at least once from cover to cover.
3) Don't stress yourself out. It isn't going to be the end of the world if you don't pass. Besides, you are going to pass, because you know the material, you are intelligent, and this is not going to be difficult.
4) Get lots of sleep the night before the exam. Review anything that you aren't completely comfortable with, in bed just before sleeping. You are going to do just fine.
5) Get up early, review some more over coffee (or whatever) have a nice relaxing hot bath, maybe some breakfast, and then off to the exam. Don't bring your books to study. You're finished that now. You are confident. You will pass, and get an excellent grade.

I hope this works for you. It worked for me. I was the first to finish all my exams, and I came in 2nd in my class.

So, the 2 major points are:

1) Relax, don't get stressed out.
2) Be confident!

well thats simple. study, don't stress, get up early on the day of exams, maybe drink some coffee and have a good breakfast (something with protien). when you study don't attempt to memorize what you think will be on the test, just read and understand, and you will retain the knowledge better.

Get some system cards, write all the key words/concepts you have trouble remembering on one side of the card and all the definitions on the other and go through the stack of cards, looking at the word/concept and trying to remember what is on the other side. Every time you get one right, put it aside. For those you have trouble with, put to the back of the pile you are going through. Soon the stack of cards you know will be bigger that those you don't. After you have put all of the cards aside, pick them all up, shuffle, and start again. This time it will be easier. you may have forgot some, but they will be only a few. This makes swatting a piece of piss.

Don't cram! That just makes things worse, get plenty of sleep, as Twist said-drink plenty of water-but not to the point that you need to constantly pee, if possible, take a bathroom break before each exam as nothings worse than having to pee in the middle of an exam and avoid caffeine-it may give your brain a jolt, but once it wears off, you are more tired than before plus caffeine can irritate the bladder making you have to pee more (a vicious cycle). I KNEW this was your survey Biggles!

Biology: the science of life; Chemistry: The chemical formula for water is H2O. Politics: George W.Bush is Republican. Sociology: the study of people in groups. There, now you should pass with flying colors. Good Luck!

Get plenty of sleep each night (assuming they're over more than one day). Eat breakfast. Don't cram the night before. If you have time to take short breaks, just to get up and stretch, do so.

Relax, don't overreach yourself. Remember that exams are only for the purpose of getting a piece of paper, and will have little lasting effect on your life. If you've learned the stuff then you'll be OK, if you haven't then it's too now late to cram; either way you might as well just take it as it comes. When revising, focus on distilling and mentally tabulating the knowledge you already have rather than making a last desperate attempt to fill the gaps. If you've had exams during the day, spend at least part of the evening relaxing and unwinding rather than spending all your time revising for the next one.

Be confident, don't worry, envision doing fantastic on the exams, find a way to enjoy studying, pretend you are someone else and have them suggest what you most need to work on, make sure you understand the primary essence of the material before learning the details, determine what the most important things to know must be, do not second guess your teacher but rather learn what you feel should be learned, turn on the stereo and dance hourly, buy chocolate covered espresso beans, take a walk in a garden until you are appreciating the flowers and have forgotten studying everytime you get blurry, write notes sketches and outlines even though you will not use them, study just until you get a deeper understanding of a topic then leave it behind for the time being and change to the next important subject you know least, change environment often but not by watching TV, and again - you will get what you will get, don't worry about career or self-psychiatry or anything, just do it with clear minded joyful conviction, and remember to ask once in awhile 'is this the most important thing to study or am I getting distracted?'.
Good Luck !

lol I haven't even started yet! * frown * I have 6 hours of exams on Monday (2 chemistry and 2 sociology), 2 biology exams on Tuesday, 2 politics exams next Friday (the day after the general election - I hope we don't get any major changes overnight!). The week after that I have another three exams (1 chemistry, 1 politics and 1 sociology).

I'm revising hard but I don't know the stuff as well as I'd like to......... Chemistry should be *okay,* biology is too easy for me to mess up completely (touch wood!) so long as I get a bit more work done, sociology's looking pretty bad - it's not hard but I have to learn up a few more studies and politics........I'm not even going to get started on politics!! There's sooo much to learn!

*Sigh*

If you know you have studied the material, and done all you can to pass, you will pass. Stop freaking out, and think about the stuff you already know.
The main thing that causes people to fail exams (other than not studying!) is fear. It has such a huge stronghold in people's minds, they can't think clearly. Fear of failing.
Get rid of that block by concentrating on the material you know. If you know you have studied, know you can pass.

Go for it!! * smile *
God bless you * smile *

First of all, stop looking at Survey Central until your exams are over. Second, get plenty of sleep before your exams, because anything you haven't learned yet, you're not going to cram in at the last minute, and your performance over what you do know will be much better if you are rested. Go over last-minute areas of difficulty with friends or classmates, and try to polish each other on the rough spots. Anything that requires rote memorization, if you haven't got it by now, try making up a rhyme or series of words to help you, sort of like how we remember the planets of the solar system with the "Mother Very Thoughtfully Made..." sentence.
Generalize your notes into small dense statements and formulae on as few sheets of paper as possible, and review the concepts in your head whenever you have a spare odd moment, such as in the toilet, in the shower, while eating, etc. And if you are at all reasonably prepared for your exams, then relax in the knowledge that you will get the marks you have earned from your entire semester's worth of effort and study, and one nervous night of cramming right before the test probably won't do much to change that. Best Wishes! * smile *

Jemmy
(reply to Biggles) posted 21-Jun-2001 10:51am
They are just the end of year final exams. My school has an exemption policy where if you have an over 85 average in a subject that is having an exam (there are four), then you don't have to write the exam. For example, I have a 95% average in science, so I was exempted. They take the mark I had so far for this term in school, and make it a percent. I got a 68 out of 70, so instead of adding an exam mark on to 68 to come up with a term mark, they make 68/70 a percent.

I've never understood the school system on the other side of the Atlantic! You seem to stay in compulsory education longer than we do and go to more different schools. In my entire time in compulsory education, I only went to two schools and I had the choice of leaving when I hit 16. Now I'm at another school (not compulsory anymore) but I could have stayed at my old school (if they'd had a sixth form which they didn't) and there are a lot of people at my current school who have been there since they were 11. Then when I'm 18, I'm done with school (I could have gone to college to do the same courses I'm doing though) and I hit university. I can't wait to go to uni. - it should be fun! * smile * (if I get in anywhere!)

I'm sure you'll get in. Wow, that's different. I have a friend who is going to england for a year. For my school, you start grade primary at the age of five. That is in elementry school. You go to elementry school for grades primary, and 1-6, inclusive. Then it's off to juniour high for grades 7, 8 and 9. High school is grades 10, 11 and 12. You finish at the age of 18, and apply to universities and stuff. Some places have elementry from primary to grade 5, middle school from 6 to 8, and high school for 9, 10, 11 and 12.
