I think devoting a domain name to survey central is

VotesAnswer
29something that will not change my usage of Survey Central.
26cool.
26better than lots of other things that have a domain name for single/limited purpose (eg, release of a movie).
21- hey! I am a tech weenie!
11better than just making a dedicated host name (eg, surveycentral.apocalypse.org, surveycentral.gweep.net).
11only of concern to tech weenies and has no real impact.
11doesn't affect me.
8the same as any other site having a domain name dedicated to a single/limited purpose (eg, release of a movie).
5worse than just making a dedicated host name (eg, surveycentral.apocalypse.org, surveycentral.gweep.net).
2lame.
2- hey! What's a "domain name"?
2something that I think about differently than any of the above and will elaborate further in the comments.
1disturbing and affects me directly.
1something that will change my usage of Survey Central.
0worse than any other site having a domain name dedicated to a single/limited purpose (eg, release of a movie).

I think it's cool! Much easier to pass the info along to friends or remember it if I'm at a different computer.

The only thing that changed was my bookmark. Can't say it matters to me that it has it's own domain. It's easier to remember though for telling friends.

Now how do I get it to stop offering me cookies - I've tried accepting and rejecting them - and it still offers them!

***Bill - That did it! you're a genious. Enhance your ego size one id and advance 4 spaces!

I think it's good in that it'll help people remember how to get to survey central.

I think it's bad in that it's a further use of the DNS as a directory service, which it blatantly sucks at. It's a great distributed replicated database, in fact the largest functional example of one on the planet, however, it's a lousy directory service. Most of the problems we've been experiencing with the DNS are really as a result of it being used as a directory service; if we had real directory services all the DNS controversies wouldn't be an issue.

Unfortunately, bill.com and bill.org are already taken but bill.net is still available. Perhaps you should go for bill.gov

Hmmm... I prefer "no cookies", too (but set my browser to prompt me, and nearly always answer "no"), but I don't remember any problems with the new domain. Probably, I just instinctively click "no" on the popup without thinking about it.

The only thing I don't understand is how they decide who gets to use .org
(Well, OK, not the only thing, but the "thing of the moment")
**Phi: Ahh, I see. Thank you.

BadtzMaru: they don't. If you want foo.org and you have $100 and no one else has it, it's yours.

OK, seven, I'm calling you on that. Do you actually know surveycentral.org's IP address by heart? (I do)

I refuse to even use text names. I memorize the actual IP addresses. And phi, I'm never sarcastic.

It makes it more convenient to tell other people about this site; whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is difficult to say: it's good in that I tend to think of more people on this site as a good thing (better statistics) and bad in that it leads to more "clustering", or population of the site by people we already know. (worse statistics that mislead you into thinking they're better) ***Hey, by the way, has the physical silicon running SC changed as well, or is surveycentral.org just a partition (or something like that) on apocalypse?

Let's just get one thing straight, Survey Central is all about my ego and how large it can grow. Stand back, you're about to be crushed.
Seriously, domain names are more like keywords nowadays. If you're griping about them having a limited purpose or how they should be in some hierarchy you missed the boat. Frankly I think it's super cool when a movie has it's own domain - very easy to find. If I have to go to Sony -> movies -> recent -> starring Ruth Buzzy -> etcetera ; I'm just never going to find it. Domains are practically throw away objects (may only last ~2 years), perfect for our fast-paced, throw away culture!
***Jody - Ah, you are in the "no cookies" camp. Well, it was hard for me to get your preference for no cookies carried over to the new surveycentral.org. I believe if you do a "logout" (see last of the top buttons), then re-login (with "remember password in cookies" checkbox unchecked), you will be back to normal. The URLs that contain "?Nu=foo&Np=bar" force cookies setting. Since most people use cookies, even rely on them - I sort of had to do it that way. Sorry for the inconvenience, let me know if my logout workaround doesn't work for you.
**** Phi, It's $70 (new lower price!) for the first 2 years and $35 each year after for a domain name now. I picked .org because I wanted it to be clear that this site is non-commercial. I've had some emails from commercial minded folks about this site and I figure it would help. Using .com is actually better for keywordiness though. Netscape and I assume other browsers assume the http://<;something>.com stuff around a domain. For example, if you type "microsoft" in the "location" text box it will go to http://www.microsoft.com/.
Yipe, when I registered surveycentral.org I considered taking surveycentral.com, but I didn't. ...and now I look and someone is actually using it. It's getting crowded out here in cyberspace.

** Steve, SC is still on apocalypse.org. It's got an IP address that's different, but it points to the same machine. We did move the files to a different place in the filesystem (more for neatness than necessity though). Mostly, it's just a name-change though.

Domain names are cool, and they'll be hot property. A domain name can be a great investment. I wish I had registered "mcdonalds.com" and "pepsi.com" years ago! Don't underestimate the power of the domain name. The other day I wanted to do an Alta Vista search, and typed www.alta-vista.com. Go ahead. Do it. You'll be somewhat surprised what you get INSTEAD of Alta-Vista.

**seanhuxter: no.. if you misspell the name of most any site, you'll end up at a porn site. it has been this way for a while, not surprising at all. heck.. look at www.whitehouse.com... it ain't government.
