Which is the best city to live in?

I want to move but can't decide where to go and I need some help! If you had a choice of any city in the world (rural or urban) which one would you choose to spend the rest of your days in and why?

Arnstadt, Germany. That's where my parents are from. I went there few times, and I loved it.
If you are looking for something more famous, than I would recomend London, or St Louie.

Anchorage, Alaska... because I was born and raised there, the economy is good, lots to do. The people are really friendly. I grew up there so I wouldnt mind the cold. We're thinkin of moving back up there... (I'd live next door to my sis (joalis) for a while!) I think the good economy is the best reason to move somewhere.

Okay! Now it is the world again! I live in Vancouver, Canada and it is fabulous! I may very well spend the rest of my life here. Other great cities I've visited: Leeds, UK; Yogya, Indonesia; and if you want to stick around the USA, I recommend Anchorage, Alaska (Although, I hear it gets pretty cold in the winter. I was there in early August.) and San Francisco, California.

Boston! Because it's a great, liberal, intellectual city, it's not too big and not too small, and tons of cool people live here. It's also got its working-class side, so it's not all snobbery and blue-blood. The racism is a big problem, though.
San Francisco is probably my second choice.

Gee! It looks like you are getting quite a few votes for the same cities. I'm surprised. I would have expected a lot more variety. So far I see 3 for Vancouver, 3 for San Francisco, and 3 for New York plus 2 for Anchorage. This might be a good time to start thinking about:
a) Do I want to live outside the US?
b) How do I feel about REALLY COLD Winters?
c) Do I want to live in a densely populated HUGE city with a high crime rate?

My city * smile * I wouldn't really want to leave the UK forever. I'm not sure I'd be too keen to leave Yorkshire either - I miss the hills when I go down south.

I was thinking about that in qualification and I can think of one place near here I might describe as a "rural city". Just did a bit of checking. It is called a City, it was originally based around a goldmine (apparently "ranked 7th in the world" whatever that means) and is in the middle of a bunch of bushland and wineries. Basically it's a city because it has a population of over 70,000, but you'd still describe it as rural - simply because it IS rural and not urban * smile *

Well to answer your questions:
a) Doesn't make a difference
b) I HATE the cold
c) I'd prefer a smaller city but I could go either way

I see. So there a lot of people there, but it's not exactly what you'd call an urban area. It's pretty rustic.

Okay, yeah, I can see that. Thanks!

I would absolutely, definitely, 100% stay in NZ. If I had a cool nightlife and loved to party, I'd live in Auckland. But I'm the quiet sort, who prefers to stay at home and read a good book. So I'd choose Napier. Napier is on the coast, it is famous for its orchards, and has heaps of fruit - apples, peaches, nectarines - for really, really cheap prices.

Canada is ranked as the #1 place in the world to live in by the United Nations. It's been #1 for a long time. Toronto is the Metropolis of Canada and to me, the best place to live in. What makes it so great is that it's one of the most multicultural cities in the world. People are friendly and the streets are clean. There's less racism, a free health plan for the general public, and most of all, I live in it! * wink *

The life style there is so kick back & the people are so nice to each other. It's the melting pot of the world. They're always smiling & they greet everyone hello,be you local or tourist. The beaches are the cleanest, clearest, most pristine beaches you'll ever see,the mountians are so breath taking & green,at almost every turn you'll see a waterfall. That's what really caught my eye.The FOOD is to die for!!!So many different kind to sample. It's a taste lovers delight.(If your on a diet, don't go there)The weather is a near perfect everyday.Nothing colder than 60% & nothing higher than 87% Perfect surfing, diving, fishing, swimming weather.
I wanna go there now!! But I gotta wait till I retire * frown *

Because,David wont move from California untill his dad passes away,& I don't fore see that happening untill I retire.I'm not trying to be morbid in any way, just stating fact. His dad is pretty dang healthy.& I have another ooooooh 12-13 years before I see retirement age.But if his dad should pass away before I retire, then we want to sell this house & move then. But he wants to go to Molokai & Molokai is really dead!!!!!

I have a friend who won't leave Santa Monica. She was doing a death watch from her porch of her mother-in-laws retirement hospital room a block away. I thought after she died we would be free to go do things (I did once talk her into leaving for a trip to see my mom near SF). Didn't happen. If Dad's dang healthy, then I don't see why you wrap your life around him. If it's a friendship thing, and it's mutual, then it seems just as plausible to have him follow you to hawaii. There's probably more than I see to it. So, your whole life you can not look forward to moving where you want to move? Bummer. So did you lose a coin toss on this, or what? I take it he has his reasons for molokai. I think some sort of compromise is in order, like maybe living on your island now, and his later. IMHO

His dad owns & runs a roofing company in Downey. His dad bought us this house & it has many strings attached. Not to mention that we are the only blood family his dad has, children wise.David says we owe him that much. He's very loyal to his dad.I'm not in a hurry.I can wait...

If i had my choice, i'd spend the rest of my days in Madison, WI (if they would get rid of their stupid yuppy mayor). If you like biking--there's much to see. If you like watersports, it's nestled between two beautiful lakes. It's got a great university which brings much culture to the city. Most ethnic groups are represented in the form of cuisine and culture. The zoo is free. :) Concerts on "the square." Kids kite flying on the frozen lake. A great street called state street (check it out:). I feel safe--in Madison.
