Oh * no *, we're not going to start that thing again are we?

You Are Wrong, and here's what my dictionary has to say about it:
continent noun 1 any of one of the world's seven main continuous expanses of land (Africa, N. And S. America, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe)

You did not know what a continent is. Now you hopefully do know what a continent is. Otherwise I think I'll give up on this one now; there's obviously no hope.

If we are going to start that one again, let's get everyone up to speed. It all started here: http://surveycentral.org/survey/6203.html Now, let's get all of the "Australasia is a continent" pinheads in this corner. And all of the sensible people in this corner. When I blow the whistle, come out fighting.

So what continent exactly do people from New Zealand live in? It isn't Australia! We regard our country as a country, and our continent as Australasia or sometimes Oceania. I don't care what your dictionary says.

I live in Australia which is in Australasia or Oceania depending on which you prefer. Easter Island is considered part of S America. Tahiti is considered part of Oceania/Australasia and Iceland is European. The term continent does not only mean the land masses. It also refers to the particular region. Britain is not physically connected with the European continent, but it is part of Europe.

Hawaii. Midway. What continent are they part of? None.
kaleb777
(reply to jjg) posted 29-Mar-2001 7:12pm
Isn't Hawaii a US state? Wouldn't that make them part of the North American continent? As for Midway, you would have to ask them, but I would think of that island as part of Asia.

I don't know why I am being attacked. I simply stated that places like New Zealand, Fiji etc consider themselves part of a continent - Oceania or Australasia. Asking which continent do you live on then calling it Australia excludes everyone from all the countries of Oceania apart from Australia.

I think, since the discovery of tectonic plates, that they have become the definition of continental boundaries. Certainly political boundaries are not.

I live in NZ and we are not considered part of a continent.

"Continent"

-"One of the main land masses of the earth."
Oxford colour Dictionary & Thesaurus.

-"One of the large divisions of unbroken land."
Webster's Dictionary.

-"The mainland of ... any of the masses of land (Europe, Asia, Africa, the two Americas and Australia) ...
Pocket Oxford Dictionary.

As has been pointed out New Zealand is not part of a continent. Why should everyone need to be? We have geographical designations (i.e. Australasia) that encompass everyone (or at least close to, don't know if any are left out or not), but why should even that matter? We don't have to be inclusive about this * smile * They are just terms that refer to certain areas; why should it matter if some place is only known as one thing and not part of some larger thing?

(reply to kaleb777) posted 30-Mar-2001 11:08am
Hawaii and Midway are both 6000 miles from any large landmass. They belong to no continent. It illustrates that not all pieces of land are part of continents. New Zealand, which is two islands, does not belong to a continent. Oceania and Australasia are logical groupings of islands and not continents.

I'm sure you will find that when countries are listed as part of continents, as they are in many atlases and websites (including the CIA's World Fact Book site) they are often all assigned a "continent" that they belong to. If countries must be contiguous with the main landmass to be considered part of a continent, Britain and Malta are not in Europe, and neither are parts of France and Italy.
