I don't know enough about operating systems to choose a favorite. I have no idea what kind of operating system our computers at work use, and at home, I use AOL-TV, so I don't even know whether it has an operating system like regular computers

I'm most familiar with Windows, but whenever I've used a Mac, I've liked them better. I've never used Linux or another operating system.

Uh, given that the only one I'm familiar with is Windows 98, I can't really make an informed opinion in terms of "favourites". I picked it anyway, not that I'm a cheerleader for Microsoft or anything.

I remember ITS fondly but, given the opportunity, I don't think I'd run it.

Actually, this is hollow praise, since I have yet to come across an operating system that agreed with me.

NT's good. I really liked VMS when I used it.

It used to be the Newton OS, because it never pissed me off. But now my Windows 2000 box is also not pissing me off. Since this desk-top machine does a lot more than my Newton, and still manages to not piss me off, I'm pretty impressed with it. (Thanks, romkey!)

Currently I'm using Windows 2000 Advanced Server and it seems to be pretty good. The only problem I've really run into is that Laplink is not 100% compatible with Terminal Service. I also like Red Hat. But Free BSD isn't too bad.

I like Win 98 SE. It seems to work well with my SCSI devices and rarely ever becomes unstable on my overclocked system.

I have previously used bootleg copies of MS Windows 2000 and XP Pro, (some experience with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME, and Vista... ME was the suckiest OS in existence until Vista, which is essential broken by design from the viewpoint of the user) but then I found out how awesome GNU/Linux was. I pretty much use KDE for my desktop, not much experience with Gnome, but didn't care for it. Some of the lighter window managers are quite functional and excellent for machines with limited resources. I didn't care much for RedHat and CentOS, Debian was generally pretty good, with large selection of packages, and flexible fairly easy installation, but not very up to date (RedHat was worse, with less flexibility), SuSE was super easy to install, but alternate repos were necessary if you wanted a good package selection. I currently use Gentoo which was quite a daunting install, but ultimate flexibility and power. Overall, there are a wide variety of GNU/Linux systems (called Distributions, or Distros) suitable for different uses. I highly recommend it, and most of them can be obtained free of charge, and superior tech support and manuals are often offered for a fee. Or you can use online forums and IRC channels, like I do.
