I don't know, I do need glasses, but only to drive and see shows....I kind of like putting on glasses and then being appreciative for having better eyesight. I guess if I saw perfect all the time I may take it for granted.

I don't need glasses. Just because I can't tell what the clock says doesn'r mean I need glasses.

I have astigmatism and my answer is no way! Elective surgery is not for me. Not unless it is guaranteed to be 100% risk-free, and it is not. My sight is too precious to me to go messing with it.

Good survey!

I like my glasses. I think they look cool.
And I'd be really bummed in thirty years if they were like, "Oops, we didn't know it would eventually make you go blind."

A friend of mine had the procedure done, and she said she would definitely recommend it, but I do not think it would correct the kind of vision problems I have.

cost isn't the reason why I haven't thus far. I'm concerned about the irreversibility of current procedures. The implant procedure sounds promising to me, though.

It hasn't been around long enough for me to try it. I am #1 CHICKEN, and also I have decent eye sight. Why would I want to risk losing it all together because of someones medical slipup. I just don't trust anyone that much.

Yes I would. I'm sick of glasses fogging up, falling off, getting smudged... and my eyes get sore after a while with contacts. I would just love to go swimming, not having to worry about opening my eyes underwater and not being able to see where I'm stepping ... * smile *

My vision isn't bad enough for me to risk it yet... If my vision gets worse, I would do it.

I would have it done just in my worst eye, because it's so bad, a mistake wouldn't affect much.

They only do one eye at a time. Had a friend who had the first eye done and although it worked a treat she said it was so painful after until it healed that she never went for the other eye. Now I'm no chicken... but neither am I a hero!

I was actually researching it for a little while. But the cost is what threw me away. I'd like to search it again and find out about it. Wish I could get the surgery to help me!

Ewww pain. Yucky. I might do it if it were free, but I never thought about the pain factor. I had cortizone shots near my ear, and it made that whole side of my face burn. I don't think I could handle pain in my eye. By the way, are you the Nighthawk who hung out on dalnet?

I think the science of laser surgery is still too young. We don't know the long-term impacts (positive or negative) as the eye ages after surgery.

I have excellent vision. Better than 20/20. I don't know how much better because I haven't had my eyes checked for years. I can read words that are printed in 1" high letters from about 50 feet away. I can read words printed in 5" high letters from about 250 feet away. I've never met anyone else who can do this.

I did check out your link! See, I saw this show on the Discovery Channel called "When Plastic Surgery Goes Bad" (when did Discovery turn into the FOX network??) and there was this guy who had simple laser eye surgery and he went blind!

Also, I'd like to give it about 20 years and see if the procedure stands the test of time.

That would suck but I guess that anything could go wrong if you did not have an experienced dr. I would choose my Dr. based on how many procedures he had successfully preformed.

I have heard that laser surgery can only correct the refractive power of the eye up to about 6 or 7 diopters. Since I am much more short-sighted than -7 diopters, it wouldn't enable me to see clearly without glasses. Since I'd have to wear glasses anyway (although lighter), it wouldn't make all that much of a difference to me. So I answered no.

I have very bad eyesight, I'm nearly legally blind, so although Laser surgery is becoming more and more talked about as safe and effective, I wouldn't have it done right now.
Any brochure explaining the procedure will mention that not all patients will be corrected to 20/20 vision, and considering the magnitude to which I would need to be corrected, there is a good chance that I would still need corrective lenses. Once having the procedure, one is not able to wear contact lenses again, and I would not want to revert back to the unattractive (for me, not saying that glasses look awful on everyone, my face shape is just not complementary to any frame style), inconvenient, expensive grade school days of wearing glasses.
So it's a singular case with me, I don't have any qualms on the surgery itself, I've seen the amazing results in peers. I'm just going to wait until there is a smaller margin of error for us blind-as-a-bat folks! :)

Near- and far-sightedness have to do with the depth of your eyeball, and correcting near-sightedness with a laser (effectively) shortens your eye depth by sort of 'shaving' your cornea. My concern is that as I age and begin shrinking, the far-sightedness that normally comes with age will be worse. I could be wrong, but I've talked with several optometrists who declined to answer due to "insufficient data due to limited history with the procedure". Sounds like yes to me.

(reply to poonow) posted 22-Feb-2001 5:56am
The far-sightedness that comes with age (presbyopia) is due to the lens in the eye losing rigidity, thus making it difficult to focus. It has nothing to do with the eyeball shrinking. Therefore, I would expect the presbyopia to be neither worse nor better after laser surgery.

Yes, friend said pain was so terrible she wished she never did it.. even when all pain gone and healed up.. it was soooo bad she remembered. Might be different for some people. Maybe she just was unlucky. Maybe it depends on the surgeon? Who knows!

Why the heck not? It would be better than wearing any kind of corrective lenses I hate wearing 'f'ing glasses! I wear contacts when I feel like it. It's not cosmetic, either. For some reason I just can't STAND those things on my face.I hate the feel of them!

My eyesight problem doesn't bother me much... I have amblyopia (lazy eye), so my vision is okay without glasses, I just get tired more quickly without them. I wouldn't have it done.

No: I've been wearing glasses for over 30 years, I'm used to them, they're part of my appearance, and I've never wanted to change; I've never wanted contact lenses either.

After an initial reluctance to wear my glasses, I now like wearing them and have never been interested in contacts (particularly after realising that I look better in specs). I would certainly not contemplate surgery because of the terrible consequences of something going wrong.
