In my opinion, bills are easier to carry than coins.

I don't care. We did this in Canada about 15 years ago. The $2 coin followed about 5 years ago. Upside: They are more durable. Downside: You can wind up with very heavy pockets if you aren't in the habit of spending your change.

The US would save SO much money by moving to dollar coins. Other countries have, and the US is behind in this area.

I rather liked the high-value coins I got while traveling in Canada and the UK. This is kind of odd, because I don't much like change in my pocket in the U.S. ...anyway, I'd really like them to make a more interesting $1 coin, and perhaps $2 as well. I like the two-metal "tuney"(sp?) from Canada and also the extra thick 1 pound coin in UK.

I really like the pound coin. It's got a nice heft to it. I don't like the current dollar coin, I still have problems telling it from a quarter by feel.

We can only hope. We'll probably get a referendum on it and the majority of the - very low - turnout will most likely vote against adopting the single currency. I hope I'm old enough to vote by then, because I want it.

Or worse, you end up like me and spend lots of money because "It's only $2" and stuff like that. I'm pkay with spending $50 in change, but it is really hard for me to break a twenty.

I like both. I've wondered if that new coin commemorates native american casinos and makes people feeding the slots feel more charitable? I think coins should be anodized. Full color coins would be cool. Are any countries coloring their coins?

I guess Canada does. Film cannisters make excellent coin purses. I once lived near a laundry who's machines exclusively used Susan B. Anthony's which you could get at the counter or change machines.

Yeah, I noticed right away with tipping, and giving change to panhandlers. Suddenly saying "Keep the change." to the waitress, or handing a coin to a panhandler became a lot more expensive.

Yeah, I usually empty my pockets to the homeless people (if they are nice to me) Now I have to look at what I am giving, because I am always worried that they will just go buy drugs or something. I'd rather just buy them a coffee.

and then 5 years after that it's the 10 and then the 20, followed by the 50 and 100! all so that we can do away with wallets and carry nothing but change purses. But one good thing about it will help us F#*$ with the worlds minds even more then we already do.

Bill it's spelt Toonie or Toony the first speling is a play on the nick-name for our $1 coin the Loonie. Also it was sujested that it be called the Queen with a bear back (note the spelling of bear as when it first came out there was one polar bear on the back).

I'm sure you know they did it in Canada-our precious 'looney 'You know what? I didn't find it life-altering in any way. We have the tooney now too and it had even less of an impact. The only thing that I found was the vending machines seemed to get more of a profit.Gotta watch those things!

When we have the means to exchange funds interpersonally. Santa Monica won't people use ATM machines unless you're a bank customer. I think they want to prevent cash that could reach drug dealers. I guess people can still write each other checks. Computers are capable of deducing who's hands cash has been in anyhow, for instance it got from Von's market santa monica to someone at Albertsons in culver city. The markets used to have club cards, but now they can identify you by your shopping patterns or your ATM card. It would be a sad day if people had to have merchant accounts to host yard sales.
Soon, I expect. Cell phones will be used to approve fund transfers to parking meters and neighbors.

There is no use in America for a dollar coin at this point. Nothing is going to change that. NOTHING. It has been demostrated repeatedly that coins beyond the quarter dont circulate very well. It would be nice if it worked differently, but thats the way it is, we need to shape our practices around the way things ARE, not the way we'd like them to be.

yes, I really like the naming of the $1 and $2 Canadian coins. Loonie - after the Loon image on the coin and Toonie as a play of words from Loonie. I doubt the US could ever show that much sense of humor with its money.

The US government has shown in the past that it can, and will do things that the majority of the people oppose. They could easily just stop producing dollar bills, despite the peoples 'use' for it. The majority of people in Canada opposed using coins too, but we didn't have a choice once they grabbed up all the dollar bills, and replaced them with dollar coins.

"Never use absolutes!" * wink *

As long as we kept the fives, we could replace the ones with fours. If something cost 3 dollars, you'd give 3 fives, and get 3 fours as change. Or you could pay with 2 fours and get 1 five as change. * smile *
