GAWD! All but five of those listed. I think British television is vastly superior to North American television. Fawlty Towers is by far the funniest TV show ever! Nothing else even comes close. Monty Python is great. I used to go out with a woman who loved Butterflies, (some people think I look like Nicholas Lyndhurst). There are lots of other great ones that you didn't list, Red Dwarf for instance. There was a great sketch comedy show on a few years ago called Harry Enfield that was a scream, one of the main players also had a bit part in Ab-Fab as the woman who ran Pats' magazine.

Zang
(reply to mandy) posted 14-Nov-2000 10:45pm
Oh, it is superb! There is only one human in the (original) cast: "Dave Lister", a junior technician (vending machine service worker) aboard the mining ship "Red Dwarf". Due to a complex series of events, he winds up millions of years in the future, aboard the spaceship with his only companions being the hologram of his deceased shipmate "Arnold Rimmer" AKA "Smeghead", an evolutionary descendant of his pet cat "Cat", and a little later an android servant. After a few seasons Dave Lister's love interest (also a former crewmate) joins the cast (I can't remember how they accomplish this feat, some sort of time travel probably). It is a really funny sci-fi comedy cult TV show. It has a HUGE following in the states. I think they even do those PBS marathons like they used to do with Monty Python. They even have Red Dwarf conventions like the Star Trek kind of thing. I'm a little surprised you haven't heard of it.

Well.. I'm back after a long absence. My previous employer put surveycentral on the block list so I've not been here since June.

I'm such a nerd about british TV it isnt true. I ticked all the boxes, although that doesnt mean I like all of them. If anyone has a nagging question about british TV, just ask me. I'll either know or know someone who does. To answer a few of the questions above though:

Although Father Ted was set in an Irish Parochial house, featured an Irish cast and was written by two Irishmen (Graham Lineham and Arthur Matthews), it was commissioned by Channel 4 - a British TV network. The writers felt that they would have more freedom if it was produced over here. It lasted for three series until Dermot Morgan, who played Father Ted, died suddenly after the filming of the third series was completed.

Two Fat Ladies was a cookery show featuring ..erm.. two fat ladies Clarissa Dickson-Wright and Jennifer Patterson (who sadly passed away recently) toured the country on a motorbike and sidecar visiting various places along the way and showing people how to cook proper english food that actually tasted nice, and wasnt stereotypical bland rubbish (although the cuisine was predominantly very fattening and centred around meat - lots of it)

The Fast Show was a comedy sketch show with a blistering pace. The brainchild of Paul Whitehouse (formally a partner to Harry Enfield) and Charly Higson, the idea was that once regular characters were established, the sketch would start, on they'd come, do the catchphrase and then on to the next character. The jokes came thick and ..erm.. fast. Most sketches were under a minute, some under 10 seconds and no section of society was left untouched. From obnoxious beauticians, car salesman that equated selling with sex, an annoying office bore, and more famously two assistants in a menswear store with more than a passing interest in the sexlife of their customers.
It ran for a few series until they got bored (thankfully no one had to die), but there is going to be a christmas special with Johhny Depp (aparently a big fan) playing the part of the unfortunate customer in the menswear store.

Black Adder! I love that show! Why isn't it on the list?
Hitch Hikers Guide to The Galaxy! I saw only a few episodes. Loved the books.

The English have good shows and bad shows. The Americans have good shows and bad shows. Yes, even the Canadians have good shows and bad shows.

No one country has a market on humour. Humour is based on knowing the background information or the references.

I loved Fawlty Towers, but I had no idea about the cast and who they were and what other things they had done. So, I missed that aspect of the show. Still, I was able to enjoy it.

Did I really write all of that? Just ignore my ranting.
