I've done two of these and will likely do a third (at least part time) sometime in the next decade.
Oddly enough, I think my current job has a much higher chance of leading to an early death.
I am somewhat surprised at the actual fatality rates: I knew that commercial fisherman had the most dangerous common occupation; I didn't realize that it was 1 in a thousand.

I'm already an airplane pilot but I don't do that as a job. I'm working on my commercial license though.

I've fantasized about the agrarian lifestyle. Waking up before dawn to milk the cows and feed the chickens. Driving around on a tractor. Smoking a corncob pipe. Wearing a straw hat, red gingham shirt, bib overalls, and gum boots. A fat wife baking pies in the kitchen. Yup, I'd be a Electric Power Installer.

The only one of those I can even slightly see myself doing is a taxi driver. And even that as a job for me would be crazy.

Pilot of course.
Crab fishing in Alaska is cool too. Very dangerous and $60,000 in 3 months!

I was raised on a farm. Nobody I know was ever killed on the job, although one guy was hit by lightening during a horse show.

My grandpa was a commercial fisherman in Alaska. We got to go with him sometimes. It was fun and we ate good!

That reminds me of a bad joke:

Q: How do you have sex with a fat chick?
A: Roll her in flour and look for the wet spot.

I was a construction worker for 2 days, then realized I didn't want to surround myself with such disgusting people...which brings us to the 'Are you stuck up?' survey...

If it's so damn safe to fly, hows come airline pilot is number three on the list?
daver
(reply to jkiehart) posted 30-Oct-2000 4:41pm
Airline pilots (as in the big jets) don't do too badly. Crop dusters and banner and glider towers skew the numbers a bit.

Also, the risk of death isn't necessarily the best measure of safety. Air travel (and other forms of aircraft use, such as crop dusters) have a low accident rate, but if an accident does happen then it's very likely to be fatal. farm workers, on the other hand, have a much higher overall accident rate, but they tend not to be fatal. You're much more likely to be seriously injured on a farm than in an aircraft, but the type of accidents that happen on farms are usually survivable, whereas those that happen in planes usually aren't.

You're right for air travel (as in airliner) but not for crop dusters. They crash a lot and they survive a lot. The planes are basically an engine, hopper, roll cage and wings: they're designed to be crashed.
