I've only heard Dylan, Hendrix, and XTC. Hendrix is the best by far of those. I think Bob Dylan is a great songwriter, but I don't care for him as a performer at all. I can't think of any song of his that he does better than someone else. He is a mediocre guitarist, a terrible singer, and he couldn't play the harmonica to save his life. Great songwriter though.

I've got a friend who practically worships him. He's a guitar player, right?

This came up just as I finished playing "The Best of Bob Dylan" which contains his version I'm not actually that fond of his version, but some of the covers I've heard are great (I think it's the Jimi Hendrix version I am most familiar with, but I've not heard it for a long time so I'm not sure).
