| steve | posted 4-Jun-1998 4:18pm I want an option between "I detest that term" and "I use that term all the time". I mean, I'm fine with the term, but I don't believe I've ever used it. Where *did* it come from? |
| lizzie | posted 4-Jun-1998 4:36pm it's lame. i hate these spelling nightmare words like phat. |
| lisashea | posted 4-Jun-1998 4:39pm I've never heard of phat - does this mean I've missed yet another culturally significant item by not watching tv??? |
| Pomeranian | posted 4-Jun-1998 9:20pm whenever I encounter the term "phat", all I can think of is this chicken in the Sony Playstation game "Parrappa the Rapper"...the chicken has this cooking show, and at one point, in the most affected white- bred voice she says "dope phat"...It was stuck in my head for days, DAYS I tell you... |
| jjg | posted 4-Jun-1998 10:23pm I don't know where the term came from, but I don't have much use for it. For that matter I don't use much slang in generally. |
| mute | posted 4-Jun-1998 10:30pm We all have the phat-nature and the not-phat-nature within us. (I checked everything.) |
| jonas | posted 5-Jun-1998 11:12am My opinion of a person immediately drops a few notches if they "phat" or "beotch" in non-satirical context. |
| jer | posted 7-Jun-1998 1:07pm Yo, I'm all that and more |
| Jaime | posted 8-Jun-1998 4:34am I've read all the comments, but I'm still in the same place : what ***** is PHAT? |
| bill | posted 8-Jun-1998 8:31am Jaime - "phat" is a slang term that was probably created by minority inner-city kids and/or "rappers" (the music form). It's an indication of something being good. I doubt any of us here really knows much about it (we being almost completely white suburban types). |
| fiore | posted 8-Jun-1998 9:43am I use that term sometimes, when I think something is really cool. I actually don't know where it came from. I can tell from the percentage stats that I'll probably get flamed for this survey. I came very close to not doing it. JAIME "PHAT" is a term some people use to expand an item or anything really. Instead of saying, "That show was really awesome/good/great/yadda/yadda/yadda." One could say:"That show was really PHAT!" Check out:http://www.phat.com |
| vanadium | posted 10-Jun-1998 11:26am I'm aphraid I don't pheel much about it one way or another. |
| Atzilut | posted 10-Jun-1998 2:35pm You know, love you all dearly as I do, I can't wait til it's discovered that moderate TV watching is the only way to become resistant to the recombinant Marburg virus that will decimate 80% of humanity in the year. .. oh wait. . I've said too much. This is who we are. Dave: darling, if your'e going to flame me with statistics, at least name your sources :) (oh, I suppose I should name my sources. . .but then they'd kill me.) Dave: oh. Dave: actually, my usage is correct. take 80% of the population, then reduce that portion by decimating them (to 1/10th)) So there. Nyaah. |
| daver | posted 10-Jun-1998 3:07pm **Atzilut: So 8% of the populace is going to die? Guess I'd better get cable... **Atzilut: I wasn't questioning the lethality of the Marburg virus (although 80% is probably assuming little medical treatment or a vicious new strain **Atzilut: Sorry, no. The 1/10th meaning of decimate is to reduce by one tenth, not to one tenth. The Romans used to do this as a means of punishing a military unit that performed poorly. I suspect that this type of confusion is what has led to the more recent meaning of the word. Perhaps it's time for another obscure words survey? |
| Resy | posted 10-Jun-1998 5:25pm pink hands allaying terrorism .... pine hats and tennis ... pelted handles arriving torn ... pretty hot and tantalizing |
| FateIsRandom | posted 10-Jun-1998 11:59pm Why do people think that mispelling a word not only makes it cool but makes the new and sperate meaning somehow cyptic due to it being associated with a commonly used word? That word is lame. why dedicate an entire survey to it? |
| presti | posted 11-Aug-1998 1:51pm The Phat Farm clothing store in Soho is pretty "PHAT" |
