Freddie Mercury from Queen died from AIDS and Eric Carr from Kiss died from cancer on the same day. I was a big fan of both and although technically I did not cry, I was terribly upset that day.

I cry when I read those stories about someone dying nobly, you know, the ones that tug on your heartstrings.

I have mourned for people I didn't know who died, but I don't think I've actually cried.
I did cry about Gandhi and Oscar Romero's deaths after seeing the movies made about them. I'm not sure if that counts, because movies also make me cry about fictional characters dying.

No. I've been affected by the deaths of certain celebrities, nothing on the level of "very upset" though. The most significant one that comes to mind was when Joy Division's "Closer" came out right after Ian Curtis committed suicide. There is a song on it called "A Means to an End" where he keeps moaning: "I put my trust in you"...Woah!... Heavy!

Yeah, that'a great song. The whole CD kicks ass, btw.

We fought for good,
stood side by side
Our friendship never died,
stranger ways, the lows and highs
Our vision touched the sky
Mortal this, we parted too soon
I put my trust in you

Yeah! A classic! The equivalent of Sgt. Pepper for my generation. That song has always been my favourite Joy Division tune. Like I said, it is so HEAVY!

Perhaps somewhere on foreign soil
wearing his lover's clothes.
Is this your goal...
your final means...
where darkness punctures deep?
Permit him still
I turn to go
I put my trust in you

My favourite is 'Atrocity Exhibition'. And 'She's Lost Control' is also pretty heavy!

Confusion in her eyes that says it all
She's lost control
And she's clinging to the nearest passer-by
She's lost control
And she gave away the sectrets of her past
And said 'I've lost control again'
And heard the voice that told her when and where to act
She said 'I've lost control again'

Yes, when Princess Di was killed in the car crash I cried.
She was an excellent role model for both young and old.
She will truly be missed.

I was a little stunned when Yizhak Rabin was assassinated.

I was at a bar in Jerusalem when it happened. Or when we heard about it happening, anyway. It was pretty freaky. There were crowds of mourners lighting candles and leaving flowers outside the official prime minister's residence (where he didn't actually live) in Jerusalem.

I would have been more scared had I been in Israel at the time. The way it was, I just got this sick feeling in my stomach, thinking of all the dead people that were about to be produced over there. As it turned out, actually, very few people died.

Yeah, the big rash of bombings wasn't until the following February (he was assassinated in October). And it was an Orthodox Jew who killed him, so it wasn't like Hamas was going to start killing people over it.

It was a very significant event here, I'm surprised you haven't heard about it. It happened on December 6th, 1989. Some psycho named Marc Lepine went postal in Ecole Polytechnique. Apparently he wanted to take out as many "feminists" as possible...he killed 14 students. I apologize if my explanation doesn't do this issue the justice it deserves, someone else could perhaps describe it better...

Wow... I've never heard of it either. I was in high school in 89, though, so I hadn't really gotten into current events yet.

Thanks for the info, I'm surprised I hadn't heard about it either, but I was in Australia recovering from final exams at the time... I probably missed al sorts of important world events.

I was very upset when Jim Varney passed away as I have always enjoyed watching his Ernest movies ever since I was little...so I was having trouble with the fact that there would no longer be any more Ernest.

yes. I cried when JFK junior died and when his wife died and when they had the shooting in Columbine. I've cried for many news stories that I've seen or heard about.

I was *very* upset when Phil Hartman died.

I was very sad when Isaac Asimov and Roald Dahl died.

I would have been said when Robert Heinlein died if I'd known about him... there was a copy of 'Stranger in a Strange Land' which was missing the first part in my basement when I was much younger. I wonder how much different my life would have been if I'd gotten to read it. It would have helped me at certain junctures in my life...
