Whenever it's safe to do so. There's no purpose in driving 70 mph on an empty road in the middle of the night with no other cars on the road.

Especially when in a bad mood -- I know it's unsafe, but I won't be a hypocrite. I've tripled the speed limit many times without huge justification.

I think that speed limits are usually set based on financial, not engineering, criteria. I don't find them particularly relevant in determining a speed to drive.

In the US, the speed limit is only very weakly aligned to a reasonable driving speed. I think it's usually OK to exceed the speed limit (so do most people, apparently) and never OK to drive recklessly.

Well, the only time I did it I was drunk, alone in my car, early in the morning, no other traffic on the road. I've never had a drivers license. I did own a car briefly when I was 19. I don't think I went much over the speed limit though, it was a residential area and the speed limit would have been pretty low.

I think I checked about half of them. I didn't check being chased by the paparazzi, remembering what happened to Princess Diana.

Unless you're in a fire engine racing to a fire at a hospital while being chased by a seriously-injured stalker in a police car who is transporting a pregnant paparazzo woman in labor, right?

It is always ok to speed.....as long as you don't get caught by the pigs!

I marked all of these options except showing off.

Evidence of completely habitual speeding: have you ever noticed that people slow down when they pass a cop, even if they weren't speeding in the first place? The assumption that one needs to slow down reveals the assumption that one is speeding; this assumption reveals just how meaningless speed limits are in the US.

When you don't drive a crapbox.

This was a dumb survey. What jerk wouldn't pick half of those? "When a woman's in labor? Nah. STILL shouldn't speed!" When a fire engine is rushing to a fire scene?? Duh!

When there aren't any police around to catch you.

The one and ONLY time I could possibly think of where going over the speed limit would be acceptable, would have to be if a big ass UFO was tailing my ass down the highway and about to beam me up on to the mother ship and take me away to a far away planet! Or every single day! Either one...

You mean like that one at the bottom of the survey with zero votes? *raspberry*

Yeah - I've always wondered just what goes through those cops' heads, seeing a steady stream of people slow down just as they pass them... they must be really amused.

There is always a reason to drive over the speed limit, except for trying to beat the red light.
