I was on the net "in the old days" back when telnet and FTP were incredibly useful. I've upgraded to "win-FTP" etc., but I still use them a lot. I'm amazed now at the number of web-people who don't know what they are, but I suppose it's like Windows users not knowing DOS.

None, I only access via a browser preferably on my Mac at home.

I've read some USENET news with Netscape, so I didn't count that, but it seems like I should... (Netscape's newsreader is way better than any I've used in a Unix Shell). I think it's good that web browsers have swallowed up some of these protocols, if I could, I'd do everything from my web browser.

All but the first three, as well as rlogin, rsh, ssh, and scp, usually from a Unix shell, sometimes from within emacs (try "M-x rlogin" within (local) emacs when dialed in to the machine you "rlogin" to, sometime!)

I use them in both environments, I switch back and forth as is useful to me. In my experience, Archie and WAIS databases are pretty much dead now, way out of date if they're still being served at all. Haven't actually seen a pointer to a gopher server in ages though I know some are still out there.

Telnet I usually use as a stand-alone application, finger from a Unix shell, and FTP either way.

I actually had to use gopher to find some things recently. It was pretty neat. Do people still use it much?

Lisa: are telnet and FTP no longer useful? Hm, I'll have to change my gweeping habits.

Mostly I use them to interact with my local UNIX network, and use the Web for the internet.
