it really depends on the person. Since I hug lion more than I hug anyone else I'd say I turn my face towards his neck.

I never thought of this until I saw it in qualification. I like the question. I think I usually turn my face towards their neck. The only time I don't is probably if I am just giving someone a friendly hug that I'm not that close to, like they initiated it and I sort of went along.

Could you explain why you even give a rat's ass?

I hug my SO and child most frequently. I look straight forward and then turn in to nuzzle or smooch

It depends on who I am hugging. If I'm not really close to the person I keep my head away. There is a select few who I turn my head inwards for.

Why I even give a rat's ass about the dead donkeys, or about the explanation text? I'm confused.

Towards their neck, assuming I'm fond of them and actually want to be hugging them. Straight over the shoulder if it's a more formal or polite hug, or if I'm hugging a relative who I don't really like hugging but would offend if I didn't do so upon greeting them.

Most people I hug, it would be an intrusion to breathe on their neck. Either that or I don't want to give away non-platonic intent.

Towards *her* neck. Not his.

casual greeting/leaving hugs=face away from the neck,
real, meaningful love/comfort hugs=face towards the neck

The advanced stats are kind of interesting on this one.

You don't ever hug men? Not even your dad? (I'm asking this seriously)

No, I never hug my dad. We don't get along very well.
I do hug male friends sometimes, but not very often.

and they: Now I think about it, I didn't really hug my parents until I moved away either. For some reason I'd forgotten that. So Maarten, is it towards *her* neck and away from *his* on those rare occasions?

I moved out 12 years ago, but still don't hug my father. We just shake hands. I don't hug my mother either, I give her 3 kisses on her cheeks.
