joe, we know you had a tough childhood, but do you really want to kill everyone on the face of the earth? Have you considered therapy?

Never saw the movie so the question makes little sense. I like that I can pick no, other, and refuse, though.

No. I think it may happen, naturally or not, but I would not make that decision for the rest of us.

I'd give it to the CDC so they could develop a vaccine.

Despite enjoying apocalypses, I'm not in the mood to wipe out mankind today. Maybe tomorrow.

Mankind has gone through many amazing disasters / wars / diseases and came back better for it in each case. It's an amazing, evolving system, and I'd hate to see it entirely wiped out. I'm extremely interested in following local, national and world events to see how views change over the years.

12 Monkeys was a well-acclaimed movie starring (would you believe) Bruce Willis. It was not a "pop" movie - it was one provoking thought. It should be in Blockbuster now :)

What, you think I'm stupid? First I'd develop nanomachinery to subtly change my body chemistry and genetic structure (keeping the same genetic code, but substituting different molecules), apply it to myself and people I like, so we're human in every way but chemically, and then release the plague. Hope y'all don't mind. I'd probably keep most of you anyway. (Greg Egan, anyone?)

i think so.***thought of this question after seeing the movie and disagreeing with someone that it would be a good idea. coincidentally i also just read a book about someone bitter becoming god for a day and they basically do the same thing. it's not so much misanthropy i don't think, as much as it is seeing that people are just flawed and no matter what there will be more bad than good in the world as long as people are around. natural life is brutal and nasty and short, and humans have just managed to make it more brutal, nastier, and longer. IMHO :)

I don't think so. What a mess that would make! :)

depends.. is it a guarenteed? would there be places that could be isolated for survivors? I am a firm believer in (I'm being generous here) the 90% rule. I would willingly see 90%-plus or so of humanity (including myself, but not specifically myself, meaning if I get caught in it so be it) just go away. I would be arrogant enough to say that I'd want to pick and choose.. or have some standardized test to get to see who survives (if anyone).

No, I would build a completely contained bubble put all people who I see fit (this is my bubble I can do what I want with it) in to it and then release it... : )

hrm - someone reading gweepnews? I love people, so I hate them showing such a lack of manifestation on their potential. *** Translation: yes. we've a waste of valuable organic compounds. what have we accomplished that would make us matter on any scale beyond self-serving ones?

I've never seen/read "12 Monkeys" and can't even recall hearing about it. Unless there is some special catch, I see no reason why I would want to release a virus that would wipe out all of humanity. ***jzp: that's a nice intellectual approach. Now think about whether you would honestly be able to cause the death of every single human being in the world, including yourself.

What the hell kind of question is that? Just ask "are you a psychopathic nut bent on obliterating the world? Or at least would you be given the chance?" What in the world would I do that for? What will it get you in the end? I might meet some super-guy who wants to stop me but that is about all, and chances are he'd kill me in the end anyway.

La Jetée is one thousand times better than Twelve Monkeys. Gilliam way over reached.
