Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

There seem to have been a lot of references to HHGTTG on SC lately. How have you encountered it?

There are several books in the series, select "The books" if you've read at least one of them - this survey isn't about which book you've read, it's solely about which media you've encountered HHGTTG in.

If you've seen or heard the TV or radio versions on recorded media (video, cassette, DVD, CD, etc), then select them - it doesn't have to have been via a broadcast medium.

VotesAnswer
48The books (any of them, including short stories)
33The TV version
25The computer game
24The radio version
14None
6Other

I watched the BBC TV series as a kid and then later on when they were repeated. The books lay around the house, although for some reason, I think I read them out of order (2nd one first). I now have the first four books in one volume and a copy of "Mostly Harmless" on its own.

Saw the tv show first, I think it was about 20 years ago, on PBS. Then read the books during the 80's (ish)...reread some of the, can't remember which...read Dirk Gently more recently...

All media. All books. Not all books in all media.

Is there any equivalent today?

steffi: I wouldn't have thought the Hitchhiker's guide was old enough to need a modern day equivalent, but if you mean a more contemporary example of a cult comedy/sci-fi series, then I'd say .

I've read the books- and I've seen the tv version... I had the computer game a long time ago for the apple... I didn't realize there was a radio version.

Eeah: The radio version was actually the first. The first book was essentially a rewrite of the radio script, and the rest followed on from there.

magbast - it was an Infocom, text adventure game (like the original Zork or Adventure - if that means anything to you). I think Activision bought Infocom a while back. They used to sell bundles of Infocom games (15) on one CD.

i'm familiar with the zork series...and i do like the text adventure games, but i just end up getting frustrated and quitting...there was one i really liked a lot, probably early nineties..i think it was called "magicians get all the girls"...has anybody else heard of that?

magbast, I haven't heard of that one. Most (if not all) of the Infocom games were written in "z-code" and there is a small but dedicated community of people who are still into z-code games. There have been many z-code games written by regular people, some are quite good. These are all text adventures. The fun thing is that z-code interpreters (programs that can run the games) are now available of various platforms including Pilots and even web-browsers.
This page: http://wanda.pond.com/~russotto/zplet/ifol.html has some links to games you can play in your web browser.

I tried to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy many years ago, and it just wasn't my speed. I got about halfway through and never finished it. I should give it a try again. I think I might actually enjoy it now.

Damn funniest books I have ever read, and it takes a lot for a book to make me laugh out loud. I used to read it on the subway coming home from work and people gave me wide berth because I kept chuckling under my breath.

Well, so long and thanks for all the fish! * smile *
