| icurok | posted 3-May-2000 3:29am I watched the BBC TV series as a kid and then later on when they were repeated. The books lay around the house, although for some reason, I think I read them out of order (2nd one first). I now have the first four books in one volume and a copy of "Mostly Harmless" on its own. |
| Zang | posted 3-May-2000 3:48am Saw the tv show first, I think it was about 20 years ago, on PBS. Then read the books during the 80's (ish)...reread some of the, can't remember which...read Dirk Gently more recently... |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 3-May-2000 4:41am All media. All books. Not all books in all media. |
| BlueberryMuffin | posted 3-May-2000 5:17am My mother read all the books and I've watched the movie many a time. |
| bill | posted 3-May-2000 7:38am Wow, I've done all 4 - do I get a prize? |
| steffi | posted 3-May-2000 9:44am Is there any equivalent today? |
| icurok | posted 3-May-2000 10:30am steffi: I wouldn't have thought the Hitchhiker's guide was old enough to need a modern day equivalent, but if you mean a more contemporary example of a cult comedy/sci-fi series, then I'd say . |
| icurok | posted 3-May-2000 10:31am Red Dwarf (www.reddwarf.co.uk) |
| Eeah | posted 3-May-2000 10:56am I've read the books- and I've seen the tv version... I had the computer game a long time ago for the apple... I didn't realize there was a radio version. |
| msgman | posted 3-May-2000 11:51am Eeah: The radio version was actually the first. The first book was essentially a rewrite of the radio script, and the rest followed on from there. |

| magbast | posted 3-May-2000 9:03pm there's a computer game?? i wanna play! |
| bill | posted 3-May-2000 11:00pm magbast - it was an Infocom, text adventure game (like the original Zork or Adventure - if that means anything to you). I think Activision bought Infocom a while back. They used to sell bundles of Infocom games (15) on one CD. |
| Strider | posted 3-May-2000 11:51pm I have all five books of the triolgy in one volume, and I also borowed avideo version from a libray once. |
| magbast | posted 4-May-2000 12:46am i'm familiar with the zork series...and i do like the text adventure games, but i just end up getting frustrated and quitting...there was one i really liked a lot, probably early nineties..i think it was called "magicians get all the girls"...has anybody else heard of that? |
| bill | posted 4-May-2000 9:56am magbast, I haven't heard of that one. Most (if not all) of the Infocom games were written in "z-code" and there is a small but dedicated community of people who are still into z-code games. There have been many z-code games written by regular people, some are quite good. These are all text adventures. The fun thing is that z-code interpreters (programs that can run the games) are now available of various platforms including Pilots and even web-browsers. This page: http://wanda.pond.com/~russotto/zplet/ifol.html has some links to games you can play in your web browser. |
| magbast | posted 4-May-2000 7:03pm thanks bill! |
| joachim | posted 5-May-2000 11:21am magbast - I know the one you mean but I can't think of the name. It had a magician on the box cover... maybe wearing a "Sorcery U" T-shirt? |
| magbast | posted 5-May-2000 3:23pm joachim- exactly...it was text, but it also has *some* graphics...i think his fraternity was -Tappa Kegga Brew- lol |
| SueBee | posted 5-May-2000 8:02pm I tried to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy many years ago, and it just wasn't my speed. I got about halfway through and never finished it. I should give it a try again. I think I might actually enjoy it now. |

| Avocado | posted 14-May-2000 2:12am Read all the books Saw a bit of a TV version of the first book Saw a radio script for either the first or the second book |
| Avocado | posted 14-May-2000 2:14am Oh, and now I remember the computer game, too! "You reach into your coat pocket and find a buffered analgesic..." |
| Jaclinhide | posted 20-May-2000 5:58pm Damn funniest books I have ever read, and it takes a lot for a book to make me laugh out loud. I used to read it on the subway coming home from work and people gave me wide berth because I kept chuckling under my breath. Well, so long and thanks for all the fish! |
| Analog | posted 25-May-2000 12:30am All of those, and several more. |
